Top Speed
Hey all, a friend of mine's uncle had a camaro that did a top speed run on the salt flats, (with all the safety equipment) and he took flight at 180... lost the rear... Can anyone confirm that? (lol) and/or talk about how you/to go faster than that...?

aerodynamics, fill the trunk with weight (free downforce)(probably better in the middle somewhere). I believe a 3rd gen firebird holds the stock body ave. at like 300.x mph. It was in Hot rod mag or car craft a yr or 2 ago. More HP = faster or better aero= faster.

I'm not sure what spoiler he's running, but I can confirm 137mph without my hood on... I'm sure faster with it :d hah... but I top out in 4th gear (about 5500) I've been 5800 with the hood, but that has before I did the work to the engine and got larger tires... I'm guessing the stock spoiler... on an IROC

I have an '82 Camaro with an engine swap, I'm told the block and bottom end came out of a truck, (so I'm guessing it may be a 350) but I was also told it had a racing CAM (I think the cam is probably only 10-20 over...) And I have camel heads... I took all my crap out, smog pump, power stearing, AC (yanked all the ac, 45lbs or so) But I was wondering... To me, my car feels strong, but suspecting what I have, I'm guessing that it would be slow... Since I whop on IROCs and the 5.7lit. Z28s... Other than having a 4-bolt main (probably doesn't do much) I think I may have roller rockers, (I've revved to 6600 before and my tac's red is 5, car tops out with no hood in 4th at 5500, so I'm guessing it's a 5500 engine) but yeah... does redlining 3rd and slamming in 2nd on accident (cuz shifter plate was nearly broken, didn't know) tell me anything other than a 4-bolt main? The engine has 25k miles on it, tops... the body has about 75k on it...? Any insight?

been clocked at 142 by a friend in the police force on a local higway at 3am, and have had it up to 162.... yep, i can confirm that the back does get a bit light!!!!
i think that the rear bumper cover catches a lot of air from underneeth and creats a pressure area under the back of the car.
theoriticlly i could hit 183 by using rpm ranges, but it took long enough to hit 162 lol...
i have the normal wing spoiler, not the trans am one btw...

German polizei got me at 260km which is somewhere around 155mph, wipers were standing off of the windshield, trans tunnel was very hot and brake just threw puffs of smoke when applied, I tried to tell him that there was no speed limit but he wasnt hearing it. I let him check out the car and he let me go! Dont think that would happen in the states. I believe Lingenfelter has a 3rd gen bird that he ran at the flats and it doesnt look like too many body mods. Check it out

I read he article about the 300+mph bird at the flats, can't find it right now, but the one thing taht stood out was they said they used a stock 87-90 wrap around spoiler (GTA/TA/Formula) style.

Car: 1989 TransAm GTA
Engine: One sweet modified 355 TPI.
Transmission: The kind that shifts....
Pontiac unofficially built a 92 TransAm for a speed test in a magazine. Officially it was built to gauge how much power and speed the 3rd gen body could handle. Its a Twin Turbo 5.7L sbc. T3's or T4 turbos, not sure. 605hp and 704lbs/ft torque. Supposedly over 200mph, looks completely stock cept for Ronal LS wheels. Here's a link for pics of it.

And you can find some info on it in the following link.
The blue ‘92 Firebird sports a twin-turbocharged small block, and was officially built to gauge how well the third-gen chassis held up under extreme power levels. Unofficially it was built to run in a particular magazine’s top speed competition. The ‘Bird cracked the magical 200 mph mark.
www.TransAmGTA.com and www.GTAsourcepage.com have some info on it as well.

Don't go more than ~110-120 with any cars in sight or get your brakes upgraded. I did kill a 02 maxima though pulled him by many cars after 115.

yeah, I like the high-speed races... although the Pontiacs have better aeros than the Camaros... I still hit (calculated out to 142) against a 4.6L Mustang GT... he was on my *** tho... then he just disappeared like he blew something... *shrug* Ohh well... then I met a girl that her brother was racing down the 22 FWY in a Black Mustang GT and he blew his engine... Funny... Coincidence? I'm not sure, I didn't care to find out... haha... I'd prolly be in for some kind of drama... Anywho...

I have to agree about aerodynamics... I got my RS up to 140mph(per winaldl since speedo only goes to 110mph) with a completely stock suspension set up. I thought she was going to fly off the ground. Needless to say, braking wasn't really an option, as it started pulling left pretty bad. So downshifting was needed. Let me just say T-56's are sweet! BTW-this was done back home out in the "sticks" and a set of walkee-talkies.

Top speed
I had my 88 GTA at 145mph and was reading 4000rpm so still below redline. I think I could have kept going up, but I ran out of road (and nerve!) 5.7 TPI with 700-R4. Oil pressure, engine temp etc all good to go. Never saw any after effects, car acted like it was no big deal. Engine had about 65K on it at that point. BONE STOCK car except for a tower brace. AND this was in CO at about 5000ft altitude!

Yeah, mine was at 3,500rpm in 6th doing 140mph. Unfortuantly I ran out of nerve as well, which I think was a good thing-I don't think the rest of the car would have held up. She was still pulling (albeit slowly) and it didn't seem to phase the engine. That was with around 155k on her.

I peged my speedo once. I have the 120, I touched the needle to the trip milage reset switch who knows what speed that is. I wouldn't recomend doing this, it was 5 years ago and the car had 120k on it (181k now). The car was very unstable at this speed, and it was very hard to stop it but the car was actually very stable at 120mph.
The firebird that set the land speed record had a stock 90 aero spoiler and was a 1992 car
