Crossfire computer upgrade?
Crossfire computer upgrade?
Has anyone heard anything about the computer upgrade that Turbo City sales? It's over $500, so I wanted to see if it's all it's cracked up to be. I have a stock '83 Z28 except for a lightweight flywheel, and soon to come, a Random Tech hi-flow cat. thanks,
Tim

I've been talking to a guy that runs a company called "ghostwheel technologies" that has an ecm upgrade for cease-fire cars using the later p/u ecm and a custom chip. I'll look for his email address tomorrow if your interested. He know's his stuff. He's the one working on the chip for my car which is a mother%*&@&# cause of the swap i did.

Do a search on "cross-fire" on the DIY Prom Board. Someone just mentioned a "conversion" to the 8746 (or 8747) ecm for the Crossfire and which solves all the "programming woes" of the CFI system.

please do not say cease-fire injection. that is not nice to say to your fellow 3rd genners. and CFI dies off at 4200 rpms stock. and TPI dies at 4600 stock. only 400 rpm diff. and my CFI runs just fine. and its got a very desent amount of power. ill be getting a g-tech soon to prove to you that CFI can make power. man i dislike people like you. were on the same team. OK
thats all i have to say

There are some very good mods available for Cross-Fire (like the X-Ram intake and the ECM conversion that I mentioned above) which can make Cross-Fire perform quite nicely. In fact, I think it's cheaper to make Cross-Fire hit low 13s than TPI on a similar engine.
If you would like a link to a cool Cross-Fire Bulletin Board web site, let me know.
Sure I want to know how to do it cheaper. Can anyone tell me specifically how it helps my car? Better gas mileage, more performance, anything else? How? thanks for all the help, Tim

The original 550 computer is very slow compared to the 8746. This increase in processing speed allows for a closer tolerance closed loop operation. The bottom line is you should see an increase in mileage (small.) The performance increase will probably be negligible on a stock motor. The place that the 8746 really shines is reprogramming. The original computer uses one time burn chips.
I guess you really have to decide how much you want to modify your car and weigh that against the inflexibility of the 550 computer. BTW you should be able to make the conversion for 120 less prom. The reason I quote less prom is I would advise you to learn to program you own proms if you choose to make the swap. If anybody wants more info please email me directly @ hotpowerandperf@hotmail.com

well. forget about what i said before. i found a complete TPI system for $450. imin the prosess of buying it. and the CFI somedays it runs good but somedays it runs like crap.
so im going with TPI because they look better and they run alot better. ive seen one run right when it started up and it ran sooo smooth. my CFI runs smooth sometimes but most of the time it rus rough. so. in about 2-3 weeks im going to be a TPI guy. but im going to keep my CFI for maybe an old hot rod or something.
oh, and im sick of people making fun of me because i drive a CFI car.
and it will be a step up from CFI

This thread is pushing 22 years old but you could look into an EBL if it's an ECM upgrade you're looking for. www.dynamicefi.com
Go to that website and you could also read a thread called "tuning with EBL" under the DIY prom forum.
