LT1 Starter from turbobuicks.com
Hey, if anyone needs a new starter, this is a GREAT choice. I just installed it last night and all of my starting problems are gone. It is about half the weight and size (important if you have headers or aftermarket y pipe) of the stock one and as I heard before, it sounds awesome when cranking. Not a big deal, but there is no more rough grinding noise like I hear in all starters pre 93. It is just a smooth kind of whistling noise and cranks with out effort. Installed easier than the stock one since it slides right through without force and of course lighter the better. It was $125 shipped and it got here in less than a week. Anyhow, like I said before HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!

The equivalent staggered pattern starter in 168 can come from a late model chevy pickup application; '99 big block app. for sure.
The LT1 starter is a good choice for T56 guys too (obviously) to clear the bellhousing.

The kicker is the high priced core charge. Seeing as *most* will not accept a full sized core, what is a guy to do when he wants this starter as an upgrade? Buy a working one and then trade it in for core?
Thats why I see the $125 shipped to your door with new GM starter bolts as a good deal.

Autozone sells them with a lifetime warranty too...something to consider regardless of the price.

hello
you guys that say autozone has this stuff, even though more expensive, is it the same thing?
Is this just a newer technology starter that happens to bolt on to our sbc's?

It doesn't "happen" to bolt onto a SBC as much as a Gen II SBC (LT1/LT4) "happens" to be based on the bottom end of an 86-up SBC. Same bearings, seals, oil pans (Other than a sensor,) rear main seal, freeze plugs, and an extra motor mount boss. Just different front casting & water routing.

Maybe one of the reason this starter is better - because it is designed for higher compression motors therefore starting quicker? Just a thought.

As for the starter itself, it's not bad. It does its job well, but because it's smaller, my wiring didn't quite reach. The main battery wire also mounts very close to the sense wire, and I had a problem at first with the battery wire twisting (because it's a tad too short) and touching the sense wire... not good. When I get time I'm going to install a longer battery cable. But... this is no fault of the starter's... it just happens to be smaller, so the wires need to be a bit longer. The starter works well.
Also, some of you guys need to realize that this is a NEW starter, not a cheap POS reman that carries a lifetime warranty because it NEEDS it. I've gone the Parts America/Autozone route with starters and alternators. Most of the time you take advantage of that warranty many times. I'd much rather have a brand new starter, and at $125 shipped including new bolts and no core charge, I highly doubt that you'll ever do much better.
