Fitting an Lt4 cam into my "gen 1" roller block..
well i just discovered that my Lt4 cam will not allow a conventional rollar sprocket to bolt up to it so Im guessing I will need a GM lt4 cam sprocket and chain..
will I have issues fitting these parts onto my older block??

Why won't it fit up? I just put a "LT1" cam into 355. They are the same camshaft really. No differences. I did have to cut part of the "stick" coming out the front of the cam that turns the timing gear. But the only reason I had to cut it was b/c it was too long and the timing cover wouldn't fit all the way on.
So no you don't have to run a LT4 timing set.

I tapped it in as far as it could go, and then cut it b/c it was still WAY too long.
That cam should work perfectly, w/ a standard timing set. Its the same cam physically as any GEN 1 hydro-roller cam...

hmm thats odd.. I bought a generic GM hyd rollar timing set upon installing the sprockets I discovered that the cam bolt holes do not match the bolt holes in the sprocket. the cam is smaller.
I looked through the GMPP catalog and it shows timing sets for LT4 as well as the normal hyd rollar and hyd timing sets.

If the cam bolt holes are a smaller circle, then they sent you a roller chain for a flat tappet cam. The dia. is smaller to allow the use of the cam retainer. All you have to do to install the LT series cam is to tap the alignment dowel in.

thanks for the reply, i went back and verified that the part was indeed for a hyd rollar cam and yet the holes do not line up plus the sprocket will come in contact with the cam retainer bolts... anyone have a part number for their chain and sprocket set thats worked for them?

Summit True Roller is SUM-G6601 $41.95
Sealed Power CTS1006 $35.89 @ Rockauto
IIRC, the GenII cam dowels are .65, and standard SBC are .3, so you need to push it about half way in

well... a normal timing set definatly does not work
so i bought a crowel timing set for an LT1 and it fits up with the bolts holes however the cam gear sits awful close to the engine block, nearly touching the cam button retaining bolts and it does actually slide on the cam retainer. don't those LT1's have a waterpump gear that goes between the cam and the sprocket?
I'm guessing im going to have to at least get that gear to keep the sprocket away from the retainer wont I...
has no one else had these issues with their LT4 cams?

Mine went in without any problems. I bought the block with a Crane cam in it for a Gen 1 roller. I just swapped the dowls from that cam into the Hot Cam and bolted up the same timing set.
