V6 with a chip

I have a stock 3.1L '92 firebird that has served me well but i want just a little more juice out of it. I was talking to some of my friend who are tuner "rice" drivers they said i could get a little more umph out of my engine if i put a aftermarket chip or computer in it. My car modifying skills are really laking so if anyone can tell me if this is true, and if it is what is reliable and fairly affordable when it comes to this. Thanks Guys

Aftermarket chips are by no means a cost effective power adder, their gains are negligable and can cost a few hundred bucks. If you had your mind set on replacing your chip, custom PROM burning would net the best results, but wouldn't be worth it unless you were big into that, or engine work demanded a new tune. Previously having a 3.1 myself, I know you aren't really gonna get any decent power without extensive modification. Moral of the story, if you feel the need to spend money on this engine, intake/exhaust are the routes to go. Need to go faster? Nitrous, or you could talk to doward about a turbo setup.. nitrous is cheaper and simpler, and if done right and used in moderation, could be safe and fun. Check out the v6 boards, and see what they've done and the gains they've netted.
