Megashifter questions...

I just installed the megashifter on my car, and I love it so far! The one thing it doesnt say, or maybe im just misunderstanding it, is the cable for the shift lock (in the steering wheel) basically doesnt get hooked up in any way and just chills out in there?

Also with the cable adjustment... I basically have to screw on the metal thing to the cable, and move the shifter and move the tranny into the corresponding gear and it should slide out of the front hole?

Re: Megashifter questions...

okay, Adjusted the cable today. It shifts fine, a little hard actally, but im told it just needs to be broken in. The cable though, seems not right. They tell you to put that black piece (that slides into the shifter bracket on the tranny) in the front hole, and center it on the treaded portion of the cable. I had to move the shifter cable all the way forward, and thread that black piece all the way forward as well. Does this seem normal/

I've got a Megashifter, put it in this past winter and quite honestly I don't understand your question. I can tell you it's a lot of fun to play with. I hope someone can help you.

doesn't take more than an hour once the console is removed. Very simple install as well.

Re: Megashifter questions...

Hi,In regards to the original shift lock cable,it does just stay disconnected. What you need to be aware of is if you happen to turn the ignition switch to off while the car is moving then your steering will lock. This is something that would'nt happen with the original configuration.B&M make mention of this in the instructions, also the shift is quite firm, but if you have to struggle with it check that the cable is looped correctly and not kinked or anything.I had to play with the tranny end of things for a while to get it right
but once you get it right it's great.I hope this helps.

Regards,
Alicat.

fat purple and yelloy wires go to the bottom 2 pins, and you blue and green wires go to the top 2 pins. You can go to www.bmracing.com and download the instructions off there.

ya i've checked the diagrams and everything over and over and it still wont start. come to the conclusion that it must be the relay so i'm going to try and replace it and see what happens.

Re: Megashifter questions...

Well basically, Im out o adjustment on the cable going down to the trans. U have the bracket in the right holes, im just all the way out of adjustment on the cable, but in every gear, the cable moves in and out of the front hole like they want it to,,,

Well if it only took you an hour to put it in, you are one hell of a mechanic.........Took me most of the afternoon..I still dont have the indicator working right, but I like it overall........BTW, mr cars wires were a different color than what the directions said, so I spent some time figuring out the wiring.......Tom

Hi,Sounds to me as if the car thinks it is in gear,so i would look at the neutral start switch on the shifter. Also check if your reverse lights are on when the key is in the run position, you have to get the reverse switch just right.

agree with alicat. If your wired right one of you switches is out of adjustment. I had to call B&M for the wires too can't remember what they were. I installed it on my 92 Camaro. I'm in japan right now and the car is in Ct so i can't look at it to help. sorry

Re: Megashifter questions...

Do you need a manual valve body to run this shifter? I heard they are typically really hard to shift though. you said that they have to be broken in, anyone have this problem with being hard to shift and did it ever loosen up?

Re: Megashifter questions...

I'm just about to run into town to pick up some fiberglass, but I figured I would chime in. About 2 years ago I installed my B&M Megashifter, I since sold that car but it was a wicked shifter.

Anyways, I remember the install like i did it yesterday... So I'll pop back and give ya whatever advice I can

Re: Megashifter questions...

Ok, here's a little advice on the install.... did mine about 4 years ago in my '86 TA.

First, what I did ... instead of cutting the wires from the neutral safety switch and wiring up the little micro switches to the B&M, just unbolt the neutral safety switch assembly from the stock shifter and let it hang out with the wires still connected. Make sure the little lever on the neutral safety switch is all the way in the park position (all the way forward) and when you reinstall the console after installation, the neutral safety switch assembly tucks away nicely next to the B&M. The ONLY problem this causes is that now you can start the car in any gear which isn't preferable but if you're dumb enough to have your shifter in gear and try to start it then you deserve whatever damage happens anyway.

Second, on adjustment of cable ..... just make sure that you check that the black piece fits into the front hole in EVERY gear, don't take shortcuts. And when I say "fits" into the hole, I don't mean by forcing it into the hole. The black piece should slide in and out of that hole with NO effort at all in EVERY gear. If it doesn't then adjust the black piece on the threads AND the part of the cable in the bracket that bolts to the tranny pan.

If the shifter is super hard to shift then you don't have the cable adjusted properly or the cable is binding from being improperly routed down to the transmission. I know this because mine was hard to shift and I originally thought it just needed to "break-in". It broke in all right. Took it about a year or so and the cable broke. After I installed the new cable and adjusted it the correct way, I realized how much easier it was to shift and what had happened with the previous cable.

You may have the T-handle screwd on wrong Daishi. It took me a couple of trys to screw on right. its suppost to be facing straight not at an angle like that. Unless of course you like it like that.

Would it improve performance to put a Megashifter in even if you have a shift kit in the tranny?

yes, when you buy a megashifter It is originally just set for the 1 2 D. you pull a pin or w/e it then it turns into 1 2 3 D compatible. However it only comes with the 1 2 D indicator for the panel. You have to buy a 1 2 3 D indicator for the shifter separately

It took me just over an hour to install mine. Read through the instructions before starting. Get everything ready, understand everything you have to do, then do it.

when i bought mine a few years back, it had 2 shift indicators; one for 4sp setups (like the 700r4) and one for 3sp (like the th350 or th400). dunno if they changed this though

I bought mine in December and mine came with both.

The instal wasn't hard but there was alot of cutting I had to do to my bird and the shift plate ended up cracking on the driver side. You can't see it because of the shift boot, but it's there.

I think that it fits Camaros better (based on the amount of cutting I did to the shift plate, and it not matching the template at all.), as well as the look of the shift plate B&M supplied.

Here's the crack...
