cam

ihave a 91 RS and plan on swapping to a rebuilt 350 with AFR 190 heads, 454 TBI with 90# injectors, Edelbrok TBI manifold custom fit to 454 an now i need a cam. i live in CA so it has to let me pass smog. I realy wanna try to get 400 HP, is that possible with an emissons legal cam...i kind of wanted to buy a short block with a cam already installed so i dont have to deal with puttng it in. What kind of specs shud i be looking for on the cam in the short block that will let me pass smog. thanx

Wow, thats gonna be a lot of engine. Ever think about switching to TPI?
Maybe the ZZ4 cam, or the GMPP 845 cam? I think the LT4 HOT would be too big. Either way, you're gonna need a custom chip to handle that, so get ahold of me and I can hook you up when you're ready.

Look at the TPIS ZZ-9 roller. It is a rework of the ZZ4 (I believe) and runs a little better. TPIS.com is where its at. I agree that the HOT cam would be too much. Idle quality will definitely suffer.

The TPIS ZZ9 cam is over twice the price and is hardly better than the ZZ4, so why bother? Unless you can find one used, its not worth it, in my opinion.

Brand new from most GMPP Dealers is around $175 new. But you can find takeoff ZZ4 cams for $50-100 if you're lucky.

I, too, am trying for a 400hp TBI's motor. The HotCam might not be too big but it is probably bigger than is necessary, and smaller is better with EFI.

I ran a ZZ4 cam with 1.6/1.5 GMPP roller rockers (for .505"/.510" lift) and Fastburn heads and got more than 400hp with a CARB. Still waitig to get a GM rochester TB from a 454 with 90pph injectors (help?) to get this rolling in TB form. I am going to use my ProJEction 2D TB unit this weekend and see if I can get the 7747 ECU to work with this system.
