Spectra after market maf sensor 87 Iroc Z
Has anyone had any issues with aftermarket maf sensors? I have a 1987 Iroc Z 305 tpi. The Bosch maf sensor died. I picked up a new one at Oreillys. Its a Spectra anyhow I got a trouble code within an hour for the maf. The wiring to the maf is good. What are the odds of gettinf a bad maf sensor out of the box? Should I go with a Delphi or AC Delco? I saw th AC Delco is 739 bucks at autozone is that a misprint? The Delpi is 140. Any suggestions? Thanks.

I may just try the Delphi. I dont know why this one doesnt seem to work properly? I am definitly returning it. The Delphi is a OEM the Spectra is not.
Re: Spectra after market maf sensor 87 Iroc Z
Last I checked, the Spectra Premium MAF is the same as the Wells MAF that was popular here a few years back. It's not a hot-wire type like stock, and not remanned.

I just read a couple Amazon reviews on the Spectra I bought one was bad right out of the box and the other was throwing codes right away. I will return it and go with a Delphi.

It's probably junk. Years ago I bought several that were defective right out of the box. I think I eventually went with a Bosch one. I have had so much bad experience with Spectra products that now I won't touch anything with their name on it. Same with Dorman.

I had trouble with a Bosch OEM-style hot wire one and have been running the Spectra for about a year now without trouble.

Nice. The one I got has a circuit board in it that is not programmed correctly. The one Im replacing is Bosch. Has been in the car over 20 years and just died. Not a bad run

Re: Spectra after market maf sensor 87 Iroc Z
I had issues with replacing a MAF years ago (1992) in my 87 L98 that I had back then. Went through 2 MAFs from TPIS before a mechanic found a faulty MAF relay. Problem solved after replacing the relay. I cant remember where the relay is located though. To many years and beers in between. Worth investigating though before spending more $$
Also, I don't remember the brand that TPIS offered.

I had mine in for transmission work. I had them check it out they said the wiring and relay are good. They figure its either incompatable or just bad. I ordered a Delphi which is a oem. I noticed the Spectra is not. It a so called direct fit. Now I have to get Oreillys to refund the money. They say if it was installed they give you another one but could refund it. Im sure they will refund it. Im in there enough.

If you were crafty, you could make a solid state relay for the burnoff using a p-channel power mosfet.

Re: Spectra after market maf sensor 87 Iroc Z (SOLVED)
Ok, I forgot to answer all this awhile back. I got the problem solved. No more trouble code is gone. As stupid as this sounds The answer was putting the original Bosch MAF back in. I was told by 2 shops that it was dead! Well it was not dead. It works great! I never bring my car to a shop. I had originally brought it there to have them do a scan and their answer was the MAF was dead. They were wrong. Still do not know why the Spectra or the Delphi don't work in the car? Happy the old Bosch is still kickin!

Re: Spectra after market maf sensor 87 Iroc Z
I've had MAF sensor problems as well. I think I got it solved with a re-manufactured Bosch. I couldn't find a new one. A Delphi didn't work. Another one my mechanic put in didn't work either but I don't know the brand. It may have been a Delphi as well or it may not have. I am waiting to get some other things fixed on my firebird once that is done I will have a better idea of whether or not I have this problem solved finally.

Re: Spectra after market maf sensor 87 Iroc Z
It seems in my research, that the burn off rely in the new ones is the problem. Possibly because it lacks them. I could be wrong on that but that is the impression I am getting. After I had the Delphi put in I found it was a know issue with those not reading right. Apparently the aren't calibrated correctly, at least not for third gens anyways.
