A 350!
Really, if you are going to take out your engine, and start spending money on it, you are much better off just buying a 350 and spending money on that. You will actually SAVE money by going that way, because a 350 has so much performance potential compared to a 305.

Maybe he would like to stay with the 305 to keep the numbers matching, or something. Anyways, if you plan on making power with a 305, it will cost some cash, but I for one, would love to see someone build up a 305, it'd be cool...

I think it would be cool to see someone build up a 4 banger, but it is not economical. I am trying to help out the guy. I think he would be pissed off if he dumped a grand into a 305, and it made the same power as a stock 350 with exhaust!!!

I don't understand myself why so many people think building a 305 would be cool or unique. Plenty of people have done it, just look for them at the tracks and stoplights getting their butts handed to them by people who spent the exact same amount of money on a 350. Many people suggest a 350 because it is the smartest thing to do for the money.
If you want to go the 305 route though do a search for 305 mods. Theres probably hundreds of posts that will help you out.

Well, first of all, a 305 aint a 4 banger, and second, I will not/can not defend my opinion about building a 305. In fact I will agree that if you are looking for power, a 350 will DEFINATELY give you more 'room' to work. But a 305 with a bunch of ponies would be neat, IMO, b/c no one likes 305's (or so it seems..). Thats all. Yes, I would love to drop a ZZ4 or such into my camaro, but I just cannot afford to, especially since its my daily driver.

people run 9s with 305s... the problem with the 305 is breathing. you put better headers and a cat-back and you see a great improvment with a 305. Throw a S/C on it...teams with some Nos and you're blowing away any rice burner that you come across. and that's what we like to do... a lot of people just wanna stick with the 305 because of the numbers and because everyone says throw a 350 in it(which is the way to go) but 305s get better gas mileage, and can me daily driven... well, better DDs that most built up 350s.
for POWER - get a 350.
for DDs - show everyone up with a 305.

Yeah, that's right... let's see... with a grand you could possibly get a 305 to breath as well as a stock 350. Because of the smaller bore and long stroke of the 305, adding headers would GREATLY help it out... it would then breath like a 350... MAYBE. Headers=600 bucks (for good ones)

1/4 mile times were better for the 350..but is was less than a second...so in saying that ,someone with a 305 cannot take a full second of their car for a grand?
ok let me tell you why i was wondering this i want to keep the stock engine. yeah ive thought about a 350 hell still thinkin bout it. Ive even thought about throwin a stroker in it too. But either way i do it im keeping the stock 305 ecspecially for now. i know i wont get **** for power out of it. im not expecting to. but i was just wonderin on what mods to do to it

The exact same mods you would do to a 350 on a limited budget.
Headers, Cat Back Exhaust, Adjustable fuel pressure reg, a hot ignition coil, even try porting some of the TPI stuff. With those mods, on a 305 tpi engine, id say you would get another 50 horses or so... maybe more if you really know how to port. Good Luck.
