Five Bad Alternators!!!

Thats right everyone, for the last 3 days i have gone through 5 bad alternators from Pepboys didnt even get a good one on the last one. First one the connection was loose and didnt make a good conection, second had a bad regulator, thrid-fifth would not put out a drop of juice.

Finally told them to give me my money back and went to O'Rielys (where i should have started) and got one the first try.

Gosh i hate pepboys

I did nearly the same thing on compresssors. The first two, remans From CarQuest, went south immediately. I finally bit the bullet and purchased a new GM unit.

Did something like that myself one week.I went through ten in one week.Back then i had the junkyard and pulled the alts off cars and the shelf. All of them would put out power between 10-30 min then die. After going through the ten i put my origional one back on(had run out of alts) and the damn thing worked for 2 years straight after that till my car was stolen and blown up when i got it back.Never did figure out what went wrong there though.

You need to stick to good auto part stores for alts starters compressers etc anything electrical. If you shop at autozone advance pepboy it is hit or miss. I swear they have a 5 year old rebuilding them in back

try going through 3 press fit power steering pumps. now that is enough to tick off the good humor man, and he is a hell of guy.

you can get remanufactured altenators. we even had the guy test some of them in the store and the ones right off the shelf were bad. went to GM and got a new Delco unit, and its run strong for 50k miles.

Same problem with my first rebuilt one, I didn't waste any more effort - I called a friend who owns a shop and he got me one form his vendor who rebuilds them locally and my friend says they are almost never bad. A few bucks more, but worked fine, never a problem.

I went thru 2 or 3 rebiult alternators a few years ago. Finally, I decided to buy a gold series alternater at AutoZone with a lifetime warranty. I have had no problems with this new unit.

It seems to be a crap shoot with rebiult alternators.

I bought one of the 'best' ones at AutoZone once as well, and I had no trouble either. Seems sometimes you really do get what you pay for...

Both of mine have autozone duralast golds never a problem. Cost more but I figure it was worth it.

I worked at Pepboys for 3 years and I'll agree that the Prostart line was complete junk. The Bosch line, however, was good. Very well tested from the factory. I never saw a single one come back.

I agree, Bosch is really good stuff overall. I just wish the Bosch stuff for my daily driver (VW Jetta) wasn't so pricey! But, I drive that little car almost 1,000 miles a week in LA traffic and it's yet to let me down one time..
