schucks..
not sure how they work, but i'm from kennewick washington.. these idiots tested my white camaro cause my service engine light was on and the car was dieing whenever i stoped or slowed down.. they said "oh you need a MAP sensor.. and i was like, well i just changed the MAF sensor.. where is the MAP located at in the car, and he's like "oh it's on the firewall, i'll sell you 1 for $70.. so i got it.. looked and looked for it.. finally i went to autozone.. and i talked to a guy named Bill.. he was like, "Well, i'll tell you why you cant find it.. your car doesn't have 1"... (also i had the part for about 1 and a half months) so i went back to Schucks, and this little short mexican manager told me that he wouldn't give me a penny for it.. and i told him, one of YOUR employee's told me i needed this part.. it took someone at your compition store to tell me this wasn't even on my car.. he then told me once again.. that he wasn't going to give me the money for the part..then he told me to leave his store.. so i called the guy above him, told him how it was, and that the part was still sealed in the box and was completely undamaged, he finally refunded the money.. long story short i guess.. i would never recomend shucks to anyone..

Re: schucks..
glad to see i'm not the only one with a complaint.. you'd think that if your own guy messed up and sold you the wrong part they'd be willing to fix it.

Re: schucks..
I thought the MAF cars did have a MAP sensor? Myabe I am wrong.
Either way, you cant blame them too much, because I think that GM used the same code(s) for both. Did you ever figure out what the problem was? Also, 2 months is kinda long to try and return something to anywhere. I would have figured it out that day, and then brought it back the day after probably. I dont even think walmart takes stuff back after 2 months.
We dont have any shucks around here, so I cant really say anything about them.

Re: schucks..
Checker, Schucks and Kragen are all owned by Advance Stores, Inc (which is Advance Auto Parts) and use the same management techniques. They compete with Auto Zone and the rest.
The problem is the local store manager. Every store has a different attitude towards customer service and I'm sure you'll notice that they change managers often. It's not a high pay job, with plenty of stress. Your best bet is to find a store with good customer service and stick with them. 90% of their parts are made by the same companies and put in different boxes. Customer service is everything in retail.
NAPA is different, their parts are usually made by different suppliers...

Re: schucks..
The Schucks in my town is great. They don't always have what I need when it comes to hardware, but they are great there and do what they can to save me a buck (finding price matches, etc). NAPA is also really good, they know their stuff and have some off the wall stuff.
I established a good relationship with the local Schucks people. When I walk in I rarely get out in less then a half hour, but that means when I bring a part back, no questions, warranty, no problem. I help out other customers at times and help them find parts, heck even some of the Schucks employee's ask me for advice on things, like their motorcycle.
Anyway, my point, find a good parts store and get to know the people that work there. It has saved me untold amounts of $$ in both questionable warranties and price breaks. Also, not all parts store inside a chain are created equal.

Re: schucks..
Our local Kitsap County West Bay stores (local chain only) are like that. Very good people in there, and the one I frequent knows me on a first name basis. Last parts I bought were on a preferred customer account. Don't ask me how, but all the NAPA franchises here in Kitsap County were all bought by West Bay. Now most of the West Bay stores also cary the NAPA name as well as their parts and many of the NAPA stores are closed. I guess that makes more purchasing power for the local guys...

It's a very low paying job being a CSK manager. My old manager put in 59-65 hours per week, and I think she makes 28k a year. And our store had a whopping seven associates. It sucked. Hard.

Re: schucks..
I worked at Schmuck's for a couple years. They pretty much hire whoever they can get, and most times the people don't know much. But that's the same way it is with most large parts stores. I'd agree with Amorget, find a store that the people are nice and know what they're talking about and you'll have much less problems. Doesn't hurt to just be friendly and ask questions, obviously if there aren't a ton of poeple waiting though.
FYI, The training they get on those machines is laughable at best.
I don't think CSK is owned by Advance. I think Advance is just a partner company. A venue for sales on the east coast. CSK Auto also owns a few other branches like Murray's Auto and Pay'n'save.

Re: schucks..
But I am not here to defend the corporate I work for, In my opinion, It all depends on location, Find a store you like for whatever reason, whether its the knowledgable employees or what, and stick with it. if schucks/kragen/checkers has someone that knows what they are talking about, go with them, if not, find someone else.

Re: schucks..
The ones I've talked to only make between 30-40k but split that amongst the 50-70 hours a week they're expected to work and you're making less than minimum wage. Sucks. I hate the numbers game.
