Need info on best K&N setup
I want to add a more free flowing air filter to my 91 formula 5.7tpi. I spoke to K&N and they don't make a unit spefically for that year, only back to 93. What I'm thinking of doing is just taking out the existing air filter and canister and buying one of the K&N universal filters to fit on there. Probably a 360 degree, round, tapered one. What do you guys do, what do you think of this idea? I saw one at a gathering last week here in Houston where the guy (Icandy I think was his handle on here but I cant find him) made his own air conductor with about a 3" diameter metal pipe and attached the 360 degree filter where the stock air filter was. I also saw a SLP setup that had a large plastic box with a filter element inside and a scoop towards the opening in the fender. This would require relocating the vapor filter unit though which I would rather not do if not necessary.
I had a drop in K&N filter in my stock airbox. Not enough increase for me. I built my own Cold Air Intake. See my webpage. I now have a K&N Custom size cone filter on there. I went to the K&N website and found the biggest one that would fit in my space. Works great and really makes a big difference. Good Luck!!

Thats exactly what I was planning on doing. I know where to get the filter and the pipe, what about the rubber boots and rubber elbows? I guess you just hose clamped them together right? Thanks for the picture

The straight and 90* elbow came from Lowes hardware. The 45* elbow is part of the original setup. It connected the air-can to the MAF sensor. Yes, it is all hose clamped together. That is the original intake boot and the 90* elbow was cut longways to reduce the opening and then inserted and permatex sealed for an airtight connection. See my website for more thorough instructions.

Very nice website. I really appreciate the detailed pics and instructions as I am a novice at working on cars. I am going to try the cold air setup this weekend. One question, I don't see any MAF sensor on my car. I had the stock air filter and air conductor off last night. All I see is a round and square hard plastic air conductor that connects with hose clamps to the rubber boot on the throttle body and the air filter canister on the tother end. The Air filter canister bolts to a bracket on the bottom and the filter element goes inside. My car is a 91 Formula 5.7tpi. I believe it is all stock, does that sound right to you? If it doesn't have an MAF then I don't need to worry about it I guess. Thanks again.
Right...yours is speed density so you don't have the MAF headache. Give you more options for running pipe and such. Let me know how it goes. Thanks for the webpage comments. Trying to document the project as I go.

Before you go to the trouble of fabbing up another intake system, try installing a K&N factory replacement without the cannister/housing it normally fits into. The K&N is rigid enough to support the mounting bolt and will have 360 degrees of exposure. I'm still searching for a vendor that makes something like K&N's FIPK (not available for pre-93 TPI).
By the way, your car is a beauty.

I used mtccl's site to help me make my custom CAI last weekend and it works great. I just used silicon sealant to make it airtight. mtccl you should add that to the directions to use some kind of sealant to postivley make it airtight. Other than that the instructions were dead on. I just had to rotate my MAF sensor because I used a smaller K&N cone filter than mtccl. Also I had to move up the canister that was next to my airbox to make the cone filter fit. I highly recommend trying this to anyone who wants a CAI. I am a novice at fixing cars yet it took me about 2 hours to figure everything out and put it together. Thanks mtccl for the instructions
i wouldn't recommend just sticking a cone k&N filter on the end of the throttle body if that's what jaf is talking about.
and as far as the setup your looking to do larry, it's alot easier with our SD cars rather than the maf.
here's a pic of my setup.

Negative on the conical to throttle body. Keep the entire air intake intact. Remove the housing that surrounds the filter and replace with K&N. Same setup sans the filter cannister. I like the pipe on Kandied91z's except I prefer the ABS plastic look as opposed to chrome or polished metal. Personal preference. Either way, the more air in/out the better.
Trans87 glad to hear my ramblings helped you out. You are correct I too have added sealant to mine to stop minimal leaking at the rubber connections. Blue RTV gasket maker to be exact. Thanks for the props!!
