Switching TPI to HSR, Conversion questions..

Hello, Im going a engine rebuild to replace my 305, Im basically going to build a L98. I want to go the steath ram route and got a couple of questions, first off do I need to buy a holley computer or my stock ecm would work with a custom prom burned? Also will my stock throttle body work for the time being? And also Would the LT4 Hot cam be a good choice? I was also thinking about the Extreme Energy's XE269HR, pr the XE276HR Cam, WHats the stealth rams benefits switching from TPI?

All help appreciated,
TRavis

You will need tuning on either computer you choose. The stock ECM is the cheaper route.
Stock TB's work fine.
The cam choice needs to match your heads and your transmission/gear combo as well.
What heads will you be using?

The HSR just flows a lot more air and shifts the torque curve up the RPM range some compared to TPI. If you have great heads to take advantage of the flow potential you should have massive power gains in the upper RPM. Like I just said in another post, I'd get some great heads before adding the HSR because heads are the bigger restriction.

I agree that the stock ECM is the cheaper route. And either will work; but IMHO, the C950 is easier to do, especially for the novice. For me, using a C950 EMS is worth the extra cost.

I have tuned a basically stock TPI engine for a 94' Suburban and the learning curve for going the DIY-PROM is pretty complicated (See the DIY-PROM experience here). I am not an expert and many guys on the board are and may have lost perspective on just how complicated it is. I did alot of research over at the DIY board here at TGO. Lots of variables with vague or no explanation on how it works and what changing a parameter affects. Just spend some time reading the threads and you will quickly see that many people struggle with big cams, getting idle correct, hot air, too cold air, etc.

I put the C950 engine management system on my 81' Camaro with Edelbrock Pro-Flo single plane system and the C950 is just too easy to tune (See Pro-Flo to C950 Conversion here). First off, Holley has done the hard work and there are many base maps to choose from. The first base map I chose needed little adjustment. Holley also has a very detailed manual that makes tuning easy, taking you step-by-step through the process and explaning in detail how a change up or down affects the engine.

Again, this is my experience and unless you are up for the DIY challenge, the C950 is a good alternative.

Best of luck, Ed
