Super Ram Installation question, yes I searched too!

Hey guys I have a 383 with a super ram on it that I am going to install in my IROC. I have never dealt with a super ram before so I read all the threads on it already. I plan on bolting the intake together on the engine stand to get the ins and outs of how it goes together but I would really like to just bolt the whole dang thing together on the engine stand and drop the whole mess in. My car is a 'stick shift car so no TV cable to deal with, only the cruise and throttle cables. My large cap dizzy should go down with the plenum in place, the IAT sensor and EGR valve should be able to be connected once in the car. My only dilemma is the injector plugs. I read that you cant fish them under the plenum so you have to run them around the runners just like they are originally. Is there anything else I am forgetting? It would be a lot easier to bolt this whole conglomeration together on the engine stand than it would be leaning over a fender. From the grounds on the back of the heads, to the connections for the oil pressure sender, the dizzy plugs, EGR solenoid plug, injector plugs, fuel pressure regulator, what am I forgetting that is in the plenum area? Has anyone ever bolted a complete engine in be it TPI or Super Ram? I just think this would be much easier than bolting the intake on under the hood...

Don't laugh but what does PBR stand for? I've looked at Acronym.com and it says Pabst Blue Ribbon and Professional Bull Rider. You've got to love all the acronyms.

Thanks

You're kidding right? Are you talking about the rear brakes mentioned in my signature??? PBR is the name of the company I believe. I am also 99% sure they are in Australia. PBR makes all kinds of brake calipers.... PBR rear calipers were used from 89-97. Next time PM me for off topic stuff, thanks.

Anyone got any other comments about Super Ram intakes?

EDIT: Mkos you beat me to it!

Hope you did not knock off the oil sending unit when you installed the motor.

Thanks for the suggestions guys. It looks like I am going to try to drop the 383 in with plenum, runners and all installed. All I will have to do then is plug everything in and put the power steering pump and AC compressor back on. I will feel much better about the quality of my work if I can comfortably get to all the bolts for the plenum and runners while on an engine stand vs leaning over the car. I sure hope this thing runs good... I'll post pics of my shredded ring and pinion for you guys once I get it running.

Be careful doing that with the plenum on - really easy for the chain to ride against the plenum and bend the devil out of it. You'll have to use one of the horizontal bars attached to the hoist chain with the chains to the motor coming straight down off the bar onto the motor I would think....

My dad and I have an engine sling we use. It is a long bar with a loop and a crank with threads. You can turn the crank and the loop will travel down the bar to transfer weight forward or rearward. There are 4 chains coming down from the sling, one for the corner of each head. You can pick up a TPI motor with one and not touch the runners, so i think it will work with the pizza box. Thanks for the heads up though.

Vern, we got the 305 on the ground yesterday, and we pulled it with all the TPI stuff intact using the load leveler. This looks promising for me to drop in the 383 with plenum and runners intact. I'll post pics as soon as I find the cord for our camera....

Some how my post got deleted!!!!!!!!!

Anyway, I thought that the SR had to use the SMALL cap distributor with the remote coil.

And there are some vacuum lines under the plenum running to the TB.

If you do a search for super ram pics you will find guys running the super ram with the large cap HEI distributor, it has been done and can be done with no modifications.

The other vaccum line you are talking about comes out of the bottom of the throttle body into a Tee. One side goes to the evap canister and the other goes back to the EGR solenoid, it is the vaccum supply to open the EGR valve. These are fairly simple to fish around under the plenum. They are thin plastic and can break easily, I made my own out of aluminum tubing from the hardware store. I am not going to reinstall any of the EGR stuff since it will be disabled in my programming. I'll use the EGR valve to block the hole off and that's about it.

Vern, I dont actually have a picture of the load leveler, but they are easy to find so I am sure you know what I am talking about. My pictures show where the chains come down and attach to the engine. This is how I pulled the engine with intake in place and didn't dent the runners up, and also how I plan to install the super ram 383 assembled as well.

The load leveler looks pretty slick, and definitely should help a lot. Just keep in mind that the back of the SR is well known for taking out the plastic cover on the windshield wiper motor. If you have to tilt the motor at all to get it in (especially if the tranny will be connected to it), the load leveler may not be enough to get it in there with the plenum on. Hope it is for you, but since I've not tried it that way I can't say for sure. I would also recommend NOT having the distributor installed when you slip the motor in. Good Luck, and please keep us posted!!!!

I am going to take the wiper motor off prior to installing the engine, and the distributor will be out as well. I just want to drop the engine in with the intake complete, the dizzy and wiper motor arent hard to deal with like the Super ram is. I will not be installing the engine and trans together. it is way easier to pull the trans off the back (TKO 600) and pull the bellhousing off than it is to snake the engine and trans out at once. If I had an automatic I would install the engine and trans together, and put the intake on after it was in the car. But since I got rid of my automatic, i now have the luxury of easy engine installation and removal, I can simply set the engine straight into the car. I'll keep you all posted.

It's ready to drop in. I'll be dropping it in complete. I'll keep you guys posted on how it goes.
