TBI to Ramjet swap ?

HI, I just was wondering if I can expect a power increase. TBI has 2" bore, was on a Professional Products dual plane, idle to 5500. Engine is flat top 355,LT1 cam, 062 vortec heads and shorty headers. It made 280 RWHP on a Dynojet. About 5200 is all it would go. This was on a fresh set of Comp 981 valve springs. Do any of you think the Ramjet will be better. Thanks, Dean.

Re: TBI to Ramjet swap ?

I just started my ramjet swap. I have a 87 TPI that I converted to a 350 with an LO5 crate motor in 2000. Unfortunately it had the 193 swirl port heads. Instead of building up the TPI, which always seems to be hp limited at 300. I bought a ramjet manifold and zz4 cam off of ebay. I bought high lift zz5 vortec heads from pace parts at $229. The ram jet crate motor is rated at 350 hp with a conserative cam. I will be running a higher lift cam, heads, so I am hoping to see at least 350 hp. GMHTP had a article way back about the ramjet in a thirdgen camaro. It ran pretty good. I am hoping the combination of an modern intake manifold, modern heads and a matching cam will provide better peformance than upgradind a TPI or TBIs.

Hi Formula, I have had my Ramjet intake on for about two weeks now. I LOVE it. It feels so much better than the TBI ever did, driveability and power wise. I never could get the TBI tune quite right. Tuned on it for about SIX months. Got the Ramjet running Great in about FOUR hours. Been tweaking on it, off and on sense then. I think I might be almost finished tuning, if we ever really get FINISHED LOL. I am going back to the dyno soon $$$$. I will let you know how it goes,Dean.

Re: TBI to Ramjet swap ?

Dean,
Glad to hear that the ramjet is working for you. What ECM are you using and what are you using to tune it?
I just ordered the autoprom and wideband from moates. I been burning chips for my maf system, but I plan to use the 730 ecm SD for the ramjet.
I definitely would be interested in your dyno numbers.
Thanks,
Lou

Formula, I tune with the EBL with port injection modification from dynamicefi.com NO chips to burn, change your tune in tunerpro and flash straight into ECM. It is super easy and super quick. I have the Zetronix W/B, love it too. Never an issue with either. I can't hardly wait to get back to the dyno. Hope to get an appointment in the next few weeks. Later, Dean.

Re: TBI to Ramjet swap ?

Dean,
I did some research, and I decided to switch to the EBL also. I would need to make less wiring changes and I like the tuning options.
Do you have the GM fuel rails? If so then I have a few questions since my bought the ram jet manifold off of ebay, and have to fabricate the fuel rails and lines myself.
Is the stock fuel rail flush against the manifold or is there a spacer? Also, what is the width of the stock fuel rail? I've attached a picture for reference.
Thanks,
Lou

Lou, I bought my intake off of ebay too. I only got the intake, no rails or any thing else for that matter. I bought a length of fuel rail stock and machined my own. They do set flush with intake, although it would probably be better if they were spaced out a little bit. I noticed they were getting very hot. Outside temp has been in the 90's the last couple of days, and that never helps. I will measure the rails tomorrow night. I will get you some pictures also. Later, Dean.

Re: TBI to Ramjet swap ?

Dean,
The only reason that I was checking on the dimensions of the rail and spacer, is that it sets the angle that the injecter sprays in the intake. It seems that this may not be an issue, since your setup doesn't seem to have any issues.
I bought a set up edelbrock fuel rails for $89 from Summit. They are .75" wide. I placed about 1/4" spacers to space out the rails. Base on your setup, I think this is too much.
Thanks, for the info. Let me know when you get some dyno info.

Re: TBI to Ramjet swap ?

I am working on a RamJet conversion for my 1988 Camaro. Is the stock hood going to clear the manifold? How did you attach the fuel lines to the stock hard lines? What fittings did you use?

Hi. I can't say about the hood clearance, I have a SS style hood. If it will clear, it would be VERY CLOSE. Here's a link for the fittings that connect to the TBI rubber lines, to convert to A/N style. .http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/AN-6-...Q5fAccessories

I don't know how the stock RAMJET fuel rails connect, I machined my own out of a length of universal fuel rail stock. Hope this helps, Dean.

Hi, first thing is you would need is vortec style cylinder heads, RAMJET intake won't bolt to TBI heads. Don't know how well it would work on a 305 anyway. It was designed for a vortec 350. Then read the stickies, you'll find the part numbers there. Dean.

Re: TBI to Ramjet swap ?

Nice pics! I should have used flexible hose like you did. It seems that I may have used the same Aeromotive regulator, mounted in the same location.
I'll post some pics later today. I used hard line for the fuel rail crossover by distributer. I may use flexible hose in the front of the engine, like Dean.

Re: TBI to Ramjet swap ?

Dean,
Did you use thread sealant on your fuel rail to AN fittings?
It look like you used it on one of your pictures.

I attached a picture of my current build. I just installed my headers this weekend, so I still have a way to go.

Thanks,
Lou

Lou,
I did use thread sealant on all connections that have pipe threads. It really shows up in the pics, not so noticeable otherwise. My dyno date has been cancled. I'm saving $$ for my LS1 swap. I have a '66 ChevyII wagon thats going to get the Ramjet. By the way, the Ramjet Is running very good. Your looking good there Lou. Keep up the good work, it just takes time (and money). Later, Dean.

Re: TBI to Ramjet swap ?

Dean,
Good luck on the LS1 swap. It would have been nice to see how the two different engines would compare in the same car. I am hoping to hit the road in about a month. I can only do so much on the weekends. I finally got my EBL, so its time to do some rewiring.

I was actually wanting to know what everybody thought of me building a "ramjet 305" for my 1991 camaro rs. I'm gonna put my 187 casting heads on eBay or the scrap pile (whicheva comes first), I read dat they are garbage for performance. My father took a ram jet intake off of a marine mefi2 350 engine, I was gonna mate it with some 059 or 520 casting vortech heads, get an E-Z efi system for the electronics, wake up my Lo3 with a production lt4 cam, "not the lt4 hot cam", and set my lil 305 up for a power adder. And no I don't wanna hear about stepping up to a 350. I have (2) perfectly good 305's and I don't believe in getting rid of something b cuz of unpopularity. Combination is everything. What do ya'll think of my combo?

Re: TBI to Ramjet swap ?

Its not because of lack of popularity, it's lack of effectiveness. It isnt because the numbering of 350 is just more pleasant to look at, it's because it gets your more power, cheaper.

What do you think of me putting the ram jet intake on a 305? You are right about what you're saying..... But. Which is cheaper? Using the 305 I already have or BUYING a 350? I rather have fun with what I have already. If a connecting rod jumps out the oil pan, I be in the process of building a 400 small block. But til then... 305 keep it live. Lol. Thanks for your input. Most appreciated, but you still didn't tell me what you think of my combo. Force induction will take whateva performance flaw I have from not using a 350. What do you think?

Buy an L31 junkyard motor for likely less then you'd pay for some new aluminum heads, and put your ramjet on it.

Re: TBI to Ramjet swap ?

When I (finally) tried to start my 88 Camari Ram Jet 350 I found that I have a fuel leak near the transmission cross member. Should I replace the whole line or just the bad section. Robber or hard lines? What diameter are the stock lines and should I go any bigger? I am not replacing the line from the pump to the tank.
