Holley Stealth Ram
Has anyone used the holley Stealth Ram intake with the Avenger EFI, HP EFI, or Dominator EFI, on a turbo motor? If so how easy or difficult is it to get setup and dialed in with the timing and fuel curves

Well if you know how to do real time programming with a laptop and all the other good stuff to make adjustments, then it should be easy. But when you install a Stealth Ram, everything changes which means youll have to hit a DYNO shop. My bro-n-law got his Holley Stealth Ram put in his 87 and his IROC wouldnt go past 20 mph. It would back fire like crazy... Good luck man. THere was a magazine that had a 86 IROC with a Holley Stealth Ram kit and when it was put together, it ran fair. But it did require a tune to get what the Stealth Ram has to offer at its full potential.

Also, with the HSR swap and it's desire to keep going up to 6,500 RPM's, you'll need to have an adjustment done to the transmission governor. I'm going to have to do that for my car because it'll shift at 5,500 RPM's and I need to go past that for me to utilize the HSR's full potential. I just thought I'd mention that to you.

Re: Holley Stealth Ram
Here is how a ECM works. It has the ability to adjust or self tune settings such as engaging the TCC, spark and fuel curves. This all occurs in milliseconds which is adjusted by the voltage and resistance of current that the sensors send back to the ECM. Now depending on loads and signals by the sensors, the PROM will search and adjust the settings for the load that the vehicle is at present state. This adjustment or self tune in the ECM will help you get the most power and fuel efficiency. Now as for tuning the ECM with a wiring harness, never heard of such a thing. Now there an other option, reprogram a blank EPROM and make changes using Tuner Pro or make a tune by using a data link cable and adjust in real time.

Re: Holley Stealth Ram
No i wasnt trying to say that the harness self tunes, I was asking about the kits themselves. I spoke to one of the holley techs yesterday(who wasnt very helpful) and he said that the Avenger has a hand held unit, that asks you a series of questions after the key is in the on position then you start it and your done. But the HP, and Dominator ECU's must be connected to a laptop to get running. I was just wondering if anyone has ever used any of these and if so how difficult would it be for a turbo car. The tech also said that all i needed to do was set the timing, check to make sure that what the timing is on the timing tab was the same as what it says on the laptop. Then plug in my target air/fuel and target timing for boost and the ECU would do the rest and it would keep tuning on its own as i drove. But I know nothing can be this simple.

Ohhh. I never heard of those wiring harnesses. I only know of "Painless."

When I had my old MAF system I did cam/hsr/cleaned up stockers/headers/cat-back and it ran fine. Was NOT optimal. But it started and idled without issue. No major surging or backfires.

I dont know about "Chevy86IROC-Z", but mine was MAF. When i originally put the HSR on this motor wit stock ECM, it backfired, surged, and the headers started to glow at idle. I couldn't get it to ilde under 2,000rpm without it shutting off as soon as i put it in drive. Driving it felt very good and responsive tho, i could spin the tires at 50mph. But it would shut off when i stopped. After it caught fire and burnt most of the wires (due to a broken dipstick) i slapped a carb on it and stuck the HSR in the garage. But now im ready for another go at it.

Was it a Speed Density car? Those can be more sensitive to changes (though seem to be easier to tune on these boards).

It has the ability to self tune settings
depending on loads and signals by the sensors, the PROM will search and adjust the settings for the load that the vehicle is at present state.
This self tune in the ECM will help you get the most power and fuel efficiency..

that is the ECM making normal running adjustments as per the program.
X amount of revs and X amount of airflow ,
ECM looks up the relevant table in the program and sees X amount of fuel needs to be supplied so it adjusts injectors accordingly to achieve that
The ECM can only work within the parameters programmed in the tune so if you have changed the manifold or injectors ; no amount of " self tuning " will make it run right

Re: Holley Stealth Ram
Well isnt tuning the adjustment to improve performance?
So I think it can go both ways, tuning or adjustment. Either way, the spark and fuel is adjusted which is based on the tables that is programmed within the PROM. But for sure, listen to vetteoz. He is good at this stuff. Hell, I learned quite a few things from vetteoz.

Yeah, it caught fire a total of 6 times in one month. I thought it was something electrical , until i realized the cap on the dipstick was broken and oil was spraying up and getting all over my wrapped headers. Well guess what happens to gassy oil when it gets on glowing headers???????lol

Re: Holley Stealth Ram
My setup runs great on the stock tune, pulls to 6k, idles fine. That's with a cam, 26# injectors and different heads too. A tune would make it better, but never experienced anything like what has been said. Try looking in the DFI and ECM section here, it should at least get you pointed in the right direction.
Just noticed the date, forgot I was searching.........
