400 super ram cam?
I'm confused after reading several threads about the super ram and need some help please, Do I use a single or dual pattern cam, any help or suggestions on a cam will be greatly appreciated. What i have as my foundation is listed below, I'm not going for the retro roller lifters as of yet and want to have the car done by the end of may.
I have a fresh 400 sbc std/std
pro comp 190 64cc heads
1.6 scorpion roller rockers
accel base ported to felpro 1207 intake gaskets
tpis afpr
30 lb cyclone injectors
accel super ram
58mm bbk tb
accel gen 6 dfi
700r4 built for street and strip, b&m 2400 stall
9 bolt 3.27
hotchkis lower control arms & adj panhard bar
kyb's
eibach's
bmr strut tower brace
I have posted a simular thread a while back with no help, I am new to this and hope that isn't held against me.
I would like to drive the car ( 87 IROC ) on the street regularly with the occasional track day
Thanks in advance

Re: 400 super ram cam?
I always liked abit more exhaust duration over the intake side. 4-6 deg split works well with most heads these days.
For a 400" motor, i'd try something in the 230-236 deg range on the intake, 234-240 deg on the exhaust. Being that a superram wants to go to 5500 rpm and probably fall off after that on a 400 with 190cc heads, I think something around 230 deg will fit the bill.
Not the same motor, but I have a 233/233 hyd. roller grind for my turbo 400" motor...195cc heads. Power range fits a superram well. Mid high 5000's rpm peak. Great street manners, 800-850 rpm idle. Good vacuum but will make power. Something like that in a flat tappet would be fine
Alot of vette guys had good luck with the ZZX cam from TPIS but its a roller. Its abit large and would be better for a miniram IMO, but its done well in a superram. 239/239 last I checked.

Re: 400 super ram cam?
280 is a good cam it just needs strong valve springs to stop valvefloat over 5700 rpm. It fits the superram power band pretty well on a 383-400" motor. You could go bigger and not have any issues if the compression is abit higher like closer to 11 to 1. It will hold onto the power after peak much better giving a broad rpm range. high 230's low 240's duration can be used there on a really well ported superram base
I forgot to ask what pistons are in this motor? Flattops should be up over 11 to 1 and should consider a decent sized cam to keep it pump gas streetable. ZZx is not a bad choice here, xfi 292 could work well too, but with smaller heads it may peak too early and give up abit of midrange. Heads wouldnt mind a 230-ish duration cam but compression may want higher

Re: 400 super ram cam?
the short block is bone stock, it has been cleaned, magged, clevite bearings, arp, throughout. The stock compression was 8.5 to 1 with the 78cc heads so i figure with the cc's down to 64 puts me around 9.5 to 1.
I didn't bore it out leaving me room for a rebuild later in life and it was too clean with a std bore and stroke.
I was looking on e-bay at the xfi 280 cam kit with cam, lifters, springs, double roller chain, retainers and keepers for around $450-$500. think thats the route I'm going to take

Re: 400 super ram cam?
Make sure its a retrofit kit if you are going roller, since those arent factory roller lifter motors, or go with the flat tappet design. In that case, dont go too high on spring pressure.
For some reason I was thinking roller motor. You may beable to use a standard cam on a no roller motor if you use a cam button on the timing cover but i'm not sure exactly how the conversion works

Re: 400 super ram cam?
just a side note:
my super ram pulls good to 6200rpm with out falling off at all.
242/248 @50 609/619 lift112 ls mech roller. bit bigger then a 406. and a bit more on the CR. 12 to 1
this cam can run mech or hy roller lifters.. sweet

Re: 400 super ram cam?
I think what Orr89RocZ is trying to say is since I'm only using a 190 cc head I may not be able to wind up as high.
