Distributor Dilemma

I think I have heard that my stock HEI distributor is too big for the StealthRam I will be adding shortly to my 355 build. Just by looking it does seem like its gonna be close. If this is the case then what would be a good plug n' play replacement for under $300. Is it possible to build mine but with a smaller cap?

Thanks in advance
( pun intended. Lol )

Re: Distributor Dilemma

Any small cap dist with remote coil from a late 3rd Gen or 87 -95 TBI truck
Rebuild from Auto Zone or NAPA

No you can't make your HEI dist into a small cap dist

Re: Distributor Dilemma

be careful with the early 90's tbi truck ones they have a larger base starting in about 92 and some tbi cars have the large base as well.

Re: Distributor Dilemma

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction. Glad to hear I can get away with freshening up a gm piece and it sounds like it will be under $100. Good news!!

Re: Distributor Dilemma

Would this be considered a Small Cap. The pictures on the autozone website dont give me that much to look at for reference.

Re: Distributor Dilemma

thats it, its easy to make a adapter for it to plug into your current harness. you will also need to buy or make a harness from the icm to the coil.

So the connectors on this unit will need to be modified or my harness? This distributor looks amazing but I really don't like the idea or splicing the factory wiring if I can help it. It's an OCD thing.

Noticed this description on that add. My cap is an 87 so maybe I have the right one then. I have an external coil already. I wanted to have the distributor ordered and on hand before I did the swap but I guess it would be wiser to try and fit mine when the time comes before I buy something I don't need. Does Large Cap = Coil in Cap? Thanks again.

"Looking to change from an 85-86 large cap distributor to an 87-92 small cap distributor? This kit contains all you need to wire it in properly. Includes a large cap to small cap adapter harness, distributor to coil harness, and coil power/tach pigtail. This kit is equivalent to the now discontinued ACCEL 74170 F-body Wiring Conv. Kit."

Re: Distributor Dilemma

Well it looks like no matter what happens when I get to this point I have some good info to fall back on. These links are great. This will really get me the performance I'm looking for while keeping the factory fresh look.

You don't have to use the GM dual connector coil that was used in the factory setup.
If going from HEI you have to splice the ign side connector for the coil into
the exiting wiring anyway so cheaper and easier to use reg coil

$25 gets you this wiring
http://www.eficonnection.com/eficonn...spx?ItemId=792
http://www.eficonnection.com/eficonn...spx?ItemId=936

and can use any coil that has reg terminals

Re: Distributor Dilemma

If your asking how to wire it use acc voltage to th hei and tach output. If your trying to replace it with a computer controlled small cap hei you need to get a new icm and notch the body of the distributor . Or get a large cap hei from a ccc or a 86 tbi or 85-87 tpi or vette
