I suggest something like 20% to 25% on the sides and 15% to 20% on the rear. Anything darker and you take the chance of being harassed by cops/inspection. I mean, you might, and lots of people do, get away with 5% (limo tint, the darkest you can get), but why chance it? Is the extra darkness worth the chance of being hassled or even forced to peel it off right there on the side of the road? Not to mention driving at night is hard; you usually have to roll down the windows to make a turn or pull into traffic safely. And once you make it out of your teens, safety actually means something (go figure). I know a couple people with limo tint, and they both regret it. Another I know loves it, but he hasn't had it long enough to come to regret it I think.

I have 26 sides, 16 front strip/rear glass, and it's perfect. Keeps the sun out beautifully, looks perfectly black at night from the outside, but you can see out easily. Can't see into the car in the daytime without shading the glass. And it doesn't look as "threatening" to cops (which is a good thing believe it or not).

And I'm well within legal limits so even if a cop thinks it's a bit too dark for his taste, he can't do anything about it.

Most DIY window films (like what you find at Pep Boys, Wal-Mart, etc.) are crap. Stay away from them. They're made with cheap dyes that will fade over the course of 6 months to a year, and end up looking purple and bubbly (ever seen those on the road? I know you have).

You can buy quality window film, and there's plenty of sites out there with instructions and tips on how to tint the windows yourself. But once you've done it once, you'll probably never want to do it again. I'm the do-it-yourselfer from hell; but the whole time I've owned my car, the only thing I've paid someone to do is tint the windows. After doing it myself on my first car (a Lincoln), I said, nope, this is not gonna happen again. And that's easy compared to the huge curved hatch-glass on thirdgens. Better left to the pros. Me dos centavos amigo.

BTW, I bet some tint would look good with your two-part paint scheme.

I've got 20% all around I I love it!!!! I haveno prob seeing out at night and it is dark enough that even during the day you can not see into the car unless you are right on it.
I would do 5% rear, but no darker than 20% on the sides just because it is a pain in the Butt to see out of then at night.

I conveyed all that you typed out with 2 numbers and a symbol.

I just keep it simple sometimes.

I see little "tents" that do tint while you wait type -places...or one of the carwashes around here has a 'tint" house...er actually thats a tent to...hmmm...where should I get it done?

Im thinking 20%...thats darker...smaller the darker,ok..hmmm

I have no idea where to get 5 percent anyway...I think 20 should be good,

those of you that have ahd it done some where...

where did you get it done? how long ago? and how well has it held up?

I did my rear hatch myself... regret it. After several failed tries I took the damn glass off and brought it inside and flipped it over and did it then. ALOT easier. took MAYBE 30 minutes!. And yes I got a few bubbles, but I also have the rear defroster to deal with... and yes I have gotten harrassed by a cop that complained he could not see into my car at NIGHT!. I said it's legal tint, and he gave me a warning and told me he would give me ticket next time. I asked a state tropper(Not pulled over at the time) just outside of a gas station. I noticed he was looking through the back window checking it. I came out and asked problem? He said no, I can see through it. BARELY, but I can. I laughed and left very quickly and quietly.

no prob jza
anyway some more advice about window tint
go to yahoo and type in "window tint laws" or something like that.
that should bring up a site or two that will tell you the laws in your state. with that in mind you need to ask yourself how dark do you want to go. (I think FL has no limit) also look at what kind of driving do you do. do you "cruise" alot where there are cop on every street corner? or do you just dive the car everyday/or weekend. if you have a flashy car with very dark tint 20% or darker expect to get pulled over if you are at a hot cruse spot every weekend. just know your laws for the state.
when a cop says it's too dark for him to see inside he is only looking out for HIS safety. he don't know who you are or how many are in the car. just deal with it and don't get offended if he gives you the "stick you hands out the window" deal he is only protecting himself.
also if you can afford it get it done buy a profesional. you may pay more but the quality of the tint will be better. most shops will not tint darker than normal, unless you ask, but then there will be no recept because they can loose their license etc.
VA has one of the worse laws 50% on the sides and 35% on the back needless to say it is horrible and bearly worth it. I have had 20% all around for about a month and I have never been pulled over for it. but i know people who have.
also one last thing about too dark tint, you have to find a inspection station that will inspect your car with them on, and not fail you (not too hard)

so those little tents may be my best bet?

I wonder what kind of tint they use.

plus they wont get bubbles in it..and if they do theyll prob fix it...and maybe there will be some sort of "warranty" for work or something..

I dunno guess Ill shop around...

VA laws are freakin stupid

Okay... You can only have 35% on the rear glass in Virginia... but read this...

- Notwithstanding the foregoing provisions of this section, whenever a motor vehicle is equipped with a mirror on each side of such vehicle, so located as to reflect to the driver of such vehicle a view of the highway for at least 200 feet to the rear of such vehicle, any or all of the following shall be lawful:

1. To drive a motor vehicle equipped with one optically grooved clear plastic right-angle rear view lens attached to one rear window of such motor vehicle, not exceeding eighteen inches in diameter in the case of a circular lens or not exceeding eleven inches by fourteen inches in the case of a rectangular lens, which enables the driver of the motor vehicle to view below the line of sight as viewed through the rear window;

2. To have affixed to the rear side windows, rear window or windows of a motor vehicle any sticker or stickers, regardless of size; or

3. To drive a motor vehicle when the driver's clear view of the highway through the rear window or windows is otherwise obstructed.

So this says you can coveryour back glass with stickers to the point where you can't see out, paint the damn window black even if you want as long as you have 2 working side view mirrors, but you still can't have rear window tint darker than 35%!!!!!!! How RETARDED!!!!!

Unfortunately, laws are often written in pieces like that. That's where a "loophole" is formed. I think we've all heard the "crazy-but-true laws" jokes a lot of states have. VA is a big offender and frequent butt of jokes on those lists. LA, UT, FL, AL are some others.

I think I'd stay away from the little "tent" setups, just because tents don't exactly portray a sense of permenance. In other words, will they be there six-months to a year from now to re-do your tint if it ends up peeling off or something?

I had mine done at an auto customizing shop that's in this huge hanger-like building. The tint has a lifetime transferrable warranty against peeling, fading, discoloring, etc. That's the route I think you should take. Find a good shop (call around, or ask people in the local car scene about their tint to help find one). It's not easy, but if you don't settle, then you'll be happier in the long run.

50% on the sides and 5% on the rear. No problem with seeing out the back at night like you would think. Also, have a reputable shop put the tint on. I've had mine on for years with no bubbling or peeling. Here's a picture:

do not go darker than 20% you will regret it. 20% is hard to see out of at night unless there are alot of lights around.,

i recomend something around 30% but go with a stronger metalic agent in the tint. it looks good in the day, just like a mirror and you can see out it at night. plus in the day time it reflects the sun instead of absorbing it like black tint.
