Its a Grand Prix with a Grand Am nose. Nothing really that new styling wise but since it comes with an LS1 I would buy it.

They shouldn't name it a GTO, thats a disgrace and demeaning to the real muscle car. If i would buy it, the first thing i'd do would be get rid of those ugly *** rims. i nice set of 15" or 16"five star pontiac rims would be sooo much better.

It's a Holden with "Pontiac Styling" as Lutz stated. Sucks butt IMO with the front end. They should have just left it alone.

I've seen them in person floating around Pontiac, MI and the more I see them the lessI hate the nose. I used to hate LS1 f-body front neds too, but they've since grown on me.

Just ran across this.
Monday 22nd April, 2002
Australia's HSV GTO - "The Car America wants".

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The following Article was taken from a US Magazine called the Pontiac Enthusiast, written and Edited by Paul Zazarine.

Let's face it. It's been tough to be a Pontiac Enthusiast if your definition of a muscle-car equates to a coupe or sedan with a powerful V8 and rear wheel drive. Fortunately, GM still offers the Firebird/TransAm, but at the of the 2002 model year, it - and its V8 engine - is history. And for the first time since 1964, Pontiac will be without a V8 engine in its product lineup.

With that depressing thought in mind, consider the car pictured on these pages. Look carefully at the rockers and note the emblem - GTO. A Pontiac GTO? No. It's a HSV GTO, and it's for sale. But not in the United States. You have to live in Australia if you want to buy one, because Holden, a subsidiary of General Motors, builds and sells cars there.

This is no wimpy V6 front driver with an aero package. The Holden HSV (Holden Special Vehicles) GTO Coupe is a bonafide muscle-car with more than adequate credentials. Under the hood is a 5.7LS1 (yup, like the Trans Am) with aluminum block and heads, sequential multi-point port fuel injection cast-steel roller rocker arms. Roller cam followers and cross-bolted five main bearings with six bolts per bearing cap to keep the bottom end snugged tight. An eight-coil pack ignition keeps the spark consistent at the LS1's upper rev limits. A special HSV Ram Air Induction system is standard, along with stainless steel headers, dual converters and 2.25 inch exhausts.

HSV rates the LS1 at 255kW (340hp) at 5600 rpm. According to HSV, the GTO runs the Australian equivalent of 0-60 at 5.7 seconds and the quarter-mile in 13.9 seconds.

The LS1 is mated via hydraulic clutch to a "Quick-Shift" T56 six-speed manual gearbox with 3.73:1 limited-slip rear. Available is the 4L60-E four speed Turbo HydraMatic with 3.07:1 limited-slip rear. The GTO boasts an independent multi-link rear suspension with a 15mm (.6 inch) rear anti-roll bar. Up front are MacPherson struts, coil springs and a 28mm (1.1-inch) bar.

The GTO features 330mm x 32mm (13x1.25) ventilated discs up front and 315mm x 18mm (12x7) rears. Both front and rear are grooved to disperse heat and gasses more efficiently. ABS is standard. The GTO rides on five-spoke 18x8 alloy wheels on Bridgestone 235/40 ZR18 S03 Potenza S-03 Pole Position directional tires.

The upscale interior sports sumptuous leather seating upholstery in black, yellow, red or tan. Standard are eight-way power front seats, side air bags, dual-zone climate control and an eight-speaker, 10 stack CD player.

The GTO is a little larger than a Pontiac Grand Prix and is based on the new Holden Monaro platform. While there is some GM family resemblance, HSV gave the GTO its own unique fascia with wide lower air intake and fog lamps. The three-element projector headlamps and special design tail lamps are also exclusive to the GTO. Around back is a three-piece spoiler with integrated stop lamp. The "Shark Gills" side panels carry 3D-effect GTO badges. The coupe body is HSV's first two-door model and also sports a roof spoiler.

The GTO isn't the only HSV Supercar offering. There's also a Callaway-tuned C4b 5.7L 402hp version dubbed the "GTS" that does 0-60 in 5.1 seconds and 13.3 in the quarter. It boasts bigger brakes and more optional equipment.

Limited production of the GTO began in January and, according to HSV, the retail price of the GTO is $73,750 Australian, which works out to $38,017 US Dollars. Pre-production sales of the GTO and GTS have been brisk, and availability will be limited with approximately 900 copies planned. No wonder, considering these cars are as potent as BMWs at half the price.

All of this begs the question why Holden, a GM subsidiary, can build a supercar like the GTO (and GTS) using many of the same components found in GM cars assembled in the United States. Aside from Corvette, GM will have nothing in their product line-ups to appeal to American high-performance buyers after 2002. With the new aggressive leadership of "Maximum" Bob Lutz at GM and cars like the GTO/GTS in Australia, can the V8 performance drought end and a new generation of Pontiac GTO hit U.S Streets anytime soon?
I think the last statement is wrong because, yep it's on it's way.

What I don't understand is, why don't they just come to the people about styling ideas, if they're going to spend millions designing and manufactoring a car, why not take a million polls on respectable sites or something. Unless they don't want everybody to know what its going to look like or have in it....

Have you ever seen any of the Ford's offered overseas? Cosworths, AWD Focus Turbo's. Escort Turbo's, etc. These aren't the fastest looking cars, but behold 300+HP in 2500# cars with AWD and a 6 speed and you are the man :hail:

There are a lot of cars that many of us would like to see here in the US. Recently Subaru started listening to it's customers and started offering the TURBO AWD WRX. Beforehand you could only get a turbo Sube outside the US, and Americans got word of such a beast and started making demands for the car.
:hail:

Now GM has known for some time of the f-body's demise. Do you really think that they would leave us hanging? They have many alternatives in the works, but with the 9/11 thing they have had to take many more avenue's into consideration, thus delaying the intrduction of the new RWD V8 cars.

You may not like the new cars styling, but if you take note of other performance cars around the world, you will see that the technology is much better than current performance cars. The structures are much stronger and lighter and the independent rear suspension makes it handle better. This technology is what is in store for future performance vehicles. You have to look beyond the US to see that we are a little behind in the times.

After seeing the side picture, the rear looks kinda like an Alero, the mid section like a Grand Prix/Grand Am, and the front like a Bonneville.

I don't think it looks that bad.

I saw a picture of one of these at a different angle a few months back and thought it was butt ugly. But seeing these pictures at different angles makes me rethink my opinion. I think it looks pretty good myself. But I still believe it is not a GTO. Why call it what its not? It's a new Pontiac muscle car, so why give it the same name as a car that was discontinued 30 (I just threw a number in there I am sure thats not quite right) years ago?

I think these cars will breath some new life into the market. These are big time muscle cars in Australia and I think Bob Lutz is on the right track bringing them to the United States. These cars might look like some of the crappy GM fwd cars, but they are exactly what everyone has been asking for. They are four wheel independent suspention cars with the same motor as the TA's and Camaros. If these cars are successful they could help convince GM that there is still a market for muscle cars. There have been articles in GM high tech performance and High performance pontiac about these cars that had lots of information about what's going on in GM right now with Bob Lutz making some changes. I love the F-bodys, but I think these cars will be awesome. As for the styling a lot of people didn't like the third or fourth gens when they first came out.

Someone mentioned that the car is nothing like the original. Uh, hello! The original GTO was a family hauler that was beefed up with performance mods. It was definately a sleeper in appearance. GM didn't spend millions designing this car as the new GTO. This car has been in production since 1998 in Australia with the LS1. The car is pushing 350 hp! It's an existing car that's getting American refinements and appearance queue's. I'm looking forward to driving one!

Welcome home Bob Lutz. We have been awaiting your arrival.
