Give me a run down of the advantages of different kinds of paint please..
I'm starting the planning stages of painting both my cars at home. This will be a first so I have little idea of what to look for in a paint. So if all y'all would be so kind as to give me some pointers..I'd appreciate it. I'm looking to use a good single stage glossy black on the first car...nice, simple and easy. the second car will be a blue metallic I'm willing to put more time in to.
1. What types of paint are available. As in urethane..laquer...etc. What are the advantages and disadvantages of all?
2. What can I expect to spend in materials per car for the different types
3. What brands are good?
Thanks

Ok, here's the breakdown (yes, I know its a lot of reading)
Laquer - old style paint, very hard when dried and requires flex agent on urethane parts. It will shine better than any other paint but requires a ton of maintance to keep it that way. Its not difficult to spray, but it doesn't seem to like a lot of metallic flake in it (I can never get it to shoot well with a lot of flake in it). Laquer was originally designed without clearcoat in mind, so it isn't necessary to put clearcoat over it if you don't feel like it. It also tends to be very pricey per gallon around 300 or so, and most cars need at least 2 to get it completely covered. Its a great paint for an older car that sits in a garage and collects trophies, but not for a car that is outside or is driven a lot.
Urethane based paint - more modern, not as hard but needs flex agent when urethane parts are removed from car to be painted. It has a tendency like laquer to spiderweb over time with out it, so I recommend using it anyway. Its inherintly more glossy and requires much less maintaince over time, but won't out shine laquer on its best day. With the proper gun, you can shoot much larger amounts and much larger metallic flakes than you could with laquer. The clear coats tend to be much more necessary to bring out shine than with laquer. Overall, its a good paint for the backyard guy, and doesn't require a fancy gun to shoot it. Prices range depending on where you shop, but usually 150-200/gallon for a decent paint but I don't know what the clear goes for.
I have both types of paint on my car currently and because it sits outside and I don't wash it everyday, the laquer side is very dull compared to the urethane side.

I have heard of the quality of Sherwin Williams automotive paints but never used them. We use PPG almost exclusively. I would not even consider a single stage paint and even moreso for black.
Black is the hardest and highest maintenance color there is constantly dealing with swirls. To apply a base/clear will give you a fighting chance of keeping a nice finish.
Lacquer is a really cool paint for some things... yes it gets hard but it's also brittle. 1 coat of high solids urethane is equal to 15 coats of lacquer so you get an idea of technology improvements over the years. It is much better suited for smaller items like motorcycles and guitars.

Every type of paint ...enamel, lacquer, ...... has it's niche .... it's just not on cars........ not anymore, unless of course you're going "retro".....

Another thing is that you damn well know that amything I've done to my car is better than what you could do. Just that I am the most **** person about my own **** and pick out the flaws in less than 2 seconds.
Also too Jester conviently forgot to add the rest of the post of where I was going off in it. Just so to make hmself look like a the better person

Not that I want to interrupt the cat fight (or is that kat fight?), but back to the topic at hand:
I'm all about Urethane paints. Lacquer is old technology. Every show winning car you see now has a 2 stage urethane paint job. Done right it'll shine as good as lacquer, especially if you color-sand each coat. Urethane is also substantially more durable than pretty much any other type of paint.
As for brand... they're all 99% the same. My father uses sherwin williams. He's also used PPG and Dupont on occasion, as well as Martin Senior (Napa). He doesn't find much difference between any of them.

Hey Kitty, why don't you shut up b!itch.
The dude asked a simple question. Chill out. If you're not going to add anything helpful to the thread, don't bother.
Jester, as stated earlier, Urethane is the way to go.

Yea, urethane is supposed to be 'the' stuff, but I hate it. Maybe what we get out here in EPA land is different than the rest of the country, but in my experience with urethane its the absolute worst paint you could possibly have to try to spray onto a car. Its not durable (chips easy as lacquer) doesnt have all that great of gloss, had to be colorsanded because no matter what we tried it had orangepeel pretty bad, and during an experiment we found out you could just peel the color right off of the primer with ease. All Sherwin Williams stuff, prepped just like you are supposed to. I personally will never spray it again.
I got some Acrylic Enamel from out of state (Oooooooooh, am I gonna get in trouble????) and its absolutely beautiful paint to deal with. It even has great chip resistance... I know because I dropped a part and it barely left a mark. I didnt even bother colorsanding what I sprayed because quite honestly, it didnt need it. It flowed out very well and looks good just like it is.
