Alright, when i bought my IROC about a year ago the previous owner had put the rectangular 4th gen exhaust tips on there which i think look really sweet. So today i pulled them off in efforts of cleaning them up a bit and putting a new coat of paint on them. Now here's the situation, I was considering polishing htem up cuz i figured they were aluminum but it turns out they're not cuz a magnet stuck to it which means its prob steel(?). Anywas is there a way to make steel look like polish aluminum or have more of a shine like chrome? Or shoudl i just strip down the paint and put a gloss black coat on there? here's a pic of what the tips look like

My friend's 89IROC with a Lt1 in it has the LT1 exhaust on it, including the tips. I think the black looks badass, especially with our bumpers. I say keep em black
how much chroming them cost? i know buying new chrome ones are ridiculously expensive, not worth putting that much money into new tips but since i already have them, any approximations on how much it would cost?

Anyway, I think you should keep them black, but thats just my opinion and not my car.
Sweet car BTW

anyways its such a hard decision, i was also gonna do the polishing of the rims following 5SIZ's new tech article so i figured going with black would provide a nice contrast with teh black on the rims and the white car. I dunno, i guess i'll go with black, and if i do, flat or glossy?
btw thanks for the compliment

Chrome will rust and look bad. Black is the way to go.

www.rksport.com they have em in polished stainless steel.
I already have the tips in black in steel, just need recommendations on whether to polish it or repaint it black. also does anyone have directions of how to polish steel? i might as well take into consideration how much time it'll take to polish them

If you are trying to keep the ones you have just paint them.

You can't really keep polished steel from rusting. It must be stainless steel. Or chromed, and chrome will rust, too.Originally posted by nikh23

Get them jet hot coated, It's like 10 bucks a foot that was about a year ago, and it won't rust through and has a good look to it also. It's kinda of like a polish look. http://community.webshots.com/photo/...41862004toXfwU
You can see my headers here are jet-hot coated, I've had them about a year and they still look good.

that jet hot coat looks pretty sweet, where would i go to get this done, do i need to find a special shop? if i can't find that then i'm sticking with the black

Here's their web site you can also get headers, from them precoated that's were I got my hooker's and they were cheaper through them, than anyone else. www.jet-hot.com

Your picture doesn't show up. Do they look like my old tips?

Mine have a polished lip around the outlet and the rest of the tip has the cast finish on it.

We ported & polished my steel exhaust manifolds due to the lack of headers in the 2.8 department. We got them smooth and got them ceramic coated and they looked great and have held up great. Just polish them up and get them smooth and then have them coated.

There are lots of places to have this done, but we used Performance Coatings in Jonesboro, GA: 770-478-2775

They do good work, and a set of tips would probably run around $30...comparable to chrome plating around here, but it will last longer.
heres a pic of the car with tehm on, i think i'm just gonna with the black for now and inquire in about the different coatings, andi 'll also check ebay for the chrome ones
