LED brake lights?

i was wondering if anyone did a LED brake light mod to their cars yet? if so post some picks. i just thought about it while cruising behind a new caddy, i think it would be cool. only question is how can u make the reverse white lights bright enough? prob just use a blub, but it would be cool u use super bright LED lights instead. i wonder how much i would cost to get all the LED units, and arrange them in neat lil row's so it looks professional.
that's all,
Opha

hey fellow clevelander. i've had the same idea, don't know how to go about it though, i'm no electronics wiz. i was also thinking of replacing the bulbs in my spoiler with LEDs since the bulbs are $6 each!

I would not recommend using LEDs as brake lights. Aver the last couple of weeks I have looked into LEDs for my gauge cluster and walked into a few sites that compared LEDs to incandescent bulbs, as brake lights and the results showed that they did not match the same level of light output. Not to mention incandescent bulbs only cost about $2 a pair vs wiring your own LED lights or buying APC (?) LED brake lights which sell for about $15-18 each.

Ukraine try #272-1177 from Radio Shack they're about $2 each. Won't last as long, but it beats the $10 OEM replacement bulbs.

i know it would cost alot more. but it would look sweet. cadliac did it, and i love the way it looks. maybe just keep a blub for the reverse white light. i wouldnt do it to my baby, but i plan on buying another 3rd gen camaro just to show off, thinking on making it a twin turbo tpi...but that's another topic. how hard would u think it might be to wire??? just like to be different.

The replacement LED bulbs you see at Pep Boys and such are not really effective. They do illuminate quicker, but that's about it. LEDs are directional, and you don't get the effect of the reflector in your tailights redirecting all of the light emitted in all directions by an incandecant bulb. The only way to make a really bright LED tail cluster would be to make a whole bank of LEDs that cover the entire area of the tailight assembly, which would require mucho soldering work. I would love to see a setup like that, but the point is leave the replacement bulbs for the import guys. There's a reason Pep Boys stocks them in the 'rice' aisle, alongside the fart mufflers and guage pods, instead of the electrical aisle.

Ragnarok, we don't refer to it as the "rice" aisle. It has come to be known as the "dumb kid aisle".

LEDs are definitely possible for the brakelights, but to do it right is not cost effective. But if you have a lot of time on your hands, and money to boot, order some board, a lot of LEDs and get to work.

Flynlow... thanks, i knew i seen someone's sig say LED brake lights. Maybe we can get some pic's or at least get a real answer to how it was done. i know it wouldnt be as easy as replacing a bulb...but sure look alot different. on a side note... ur sig is nice. i esp. like the eerrr... car! nice tires u got there. haha
well if anything, i just want to see some picks as to how it looks w/ the brake lights showing. that's one apperance mod i would think of doing. not only on this car, but i think if someone started mass producing LED light systems it would blow away the "white" or "euro" lights. and by the way, what company makes "white" lights for our cars now? i didnt know they were out yet until i seen them on someones car just yesterday!!!! i think they look good on white and black cars mostly.

I saw a set on a car at a show once...they had cut out the red sections, and glued in clear sections from another set of taillights. The idea was ok (if you like clear lenses...personally I don't), but the execution was a little lacking.

I know how you could do it. Look for the company JamStraight at www.godfathercustoms.com ... convert the rear harness to the 3157 and run their LED's. They kick *** and are fairly cheap. I want to try this when I do my taillight mod.

I believe he's MIA after being run off the board for taking people's money and not delivering any goods. I could be thinking of somebody else, but I don't think so.

Ive talked to him in E-mail like 2-3weeks ago. The deal was set. He would ship me his serp. setup to powdercoat mirror black. in exchange for a blue led dash kit. but I havent heard back from him.

Yes its the same Guy everyone is talking about Edmond. I dono the whole story of the past and It did come up when We talked about the deal we had going. He still posts here. Look for another LED thread he posted in when this came up again.

His Kits do look AWESOME and I wish he would get back ahold of me about it. The Past is the Past.. Give the guy a break. If he rips someone else off again Then you say Say " I TOLD YOU SO"

On a side note. I'm gona pull apart a 91 Rs dash cluster i picked up in a junk yard to mess with and see about doing a LED board like he did.

Hey guys,

I found some replacement bulbs for 1157's that have 12 led's in them. I put them in the front of my 90. They are definately brighter than incadecents. Not sure if these are the ones that you see at pep boys or not. Here is the web page for the bulbs. They even make them for 194's.

www.jamstrait.com

One note: I used the super-bright reds (hyper-brights are even bighter, but the store I went to did not have them) in the front. Had them in there for a couple months w/o any hassel. Makes the car look like it has red eyes. I did however get a ticket last night for having reds in the front since red and blues are reserved for emergency vehicles. Dk head cop didn't even give me a warning. In AZ, it's a $120 ticket. Like 2 red lights in the bird really make it look like an emergency vehicle!?! I hate cops!
