Hey there..

I hope someone can help. I just bought an 87 IROC B2L L98 B4Z. It's a little rough but has all sorts of potential. I need to know what the original decals looked like. The badges. I realize in 87 Z28 was on the sides under the doors.. and not IROC Z but, was the 5.7 liter sticker on the doors? How about on the back bumper? I know the car was "victory red." It's now a very bad white. Also, some dork spray painted the stock wheels black. Is there a way to strip that off and not affect the stock coating? The original body color is starting to show in places.. is there a way to strip this cheezy paint job off? It's a great car with a s&^t load of rpos. Any help is appreciated.

p.s. anyone know what rpo 1HV is? Can't get a handle on it anywhere.

When you say on the sides under the doors, do you mean the rocker panel? Up front, on the bottom, by the front wheel? I believe it might have a sticker saying 5.7 Tuned Port Injection. The IROC-Z door decal should be up front under the mirrors, on '88-90 they were back under the door handle. On the rear bumper it would say 5.7 Tuned Port Injection.

The 5.7 TUNED PORT INJECTION decal goes directly under the Z28 emblem on the rocker panel. Centered, about 1/2" below. (or whatever looks best to you)

The wheels were probably painted because the clearcoat peeled, chipped, or got cloudy, you'll probably have to strip and repaint them. There's no good way to remove paint without affecting what's under it, that I know of. If you don't drive it everyday, or have other wheels, this would be a great time to polish those, if you like the look.

Same with the body, it was probably repainted because it needed it. A good time to do whatever bodywork it needs, and put a nice, new paintjob on it.

The IROC-Z decals on the doors go on the rear of the door in '87, most decals come with the measurements. At least mine did. The 5.7 Tuned Port Injection emblem goes on the drivers side of the rear bumper cover.

1HV just refers to the IROC Z component package, sometimes there will be several codes that basically say the same thing. It's kinda like a footnote to the other codes, I think.

The 5.7L was under the Z28 on the gfx. And the IROC decal was still towards the front of the door.

Thanks a million
I appreciate your replies. Were all the badges the same colors in 87? Or would the z28 have a different scheme for the body color. I don't have other wheels, but don't mind taking some time on these. As for the body paint, I'd like to try to get this paint off myself. I think this car may have been a theft recovery at some point, although I can't find any documentation proving it. The original color is "victory red" but, it was shabbily painted white, and the ground effects black. It's a really bad job as the engine compartment and the door jambs are still the original color. It's starting to peel on the ground effects a bit, and it's under there too. Just wondering if there was a chemical that wasn't too abrasive, yet abrasive enough to get rid of this body paint.. and the wheels too.

thanks again,

jp

Jp did you just purchase this car in upstate NY around east Greenbush out of the Want Ad Digest? I think this car is the one with the VT Vin Number in the door jamb area and no GM vin. The owner lives in Mass. If so I have looked at this car before and sold the old owner parts for it. I am local in that area and have most of the parts that you need for the car. You can stop by my shop if you want or give me an email.

Thanks a million Scott. Can you either post some more pics or email me some more? I'd especially like to see some close up shots of the badges and decals. Also, is there a chemical or solution available to get this black spray paint off the wheels? I really don't want to go at them with sand paper or steel wool.

BTW -- my RPOs list the color this way.

74U : PRIMARY COLOR, EXTERIOR, VICTORY RED (91)

Thanks again,

jp

I'll get you more pics soon. The color 74U is Dark red metallic in 87. The (91) found in the rpo table was the name used on 91 Firebirds.
