Neons in hood vents

I decided to do this a few weeks back with a black light neon but didn't show up well so I used green. Would you consider this rice? Please post your opinion.

I really like it. NIce touch there. So the underhood temps won't do any damage?

I think it would be way cooler if you made a cold air assembly out of those.

I think it looks pretty cool...can't tell for sure in the picture, but if the tubes are showing it would look better if you shrouded them slightly to give an indirect glow. We're planning on something similar on Redraif's car.

Get ready, though...someone will scream "rice" soon!

So far they have been doing fine. I currently don't have the insulation on the underside of the hood but will be adding that soon to help give it some more protection. As for the 21st, I'm not sure if I will be able to make it. It's about a 4 hour drive from where I'm at and would need a lil more time to plan for it also because of work. If you live near the Tidewater area, There's a f-body meet over in Newpot News at 3pm on Saturday. I think it's posted here: http://www.ws6zxr.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=11767

I thought about that but would be a pain because of the MAF. When I'm done with my harley, I will be looking into installing a ram air hood on her and maybe a 383. As for the lil 305, she gets me from point A to B and will not be wasting my money on it. Maybe a 250 shot at the track and a call from AAA when I do have a motor but that would be it.

No, dude. :slap:

Hehe. KITT's lights served a purpose. They scanned the area in front so KITT could see. It also had a turbo boost button.

I don't know about down there in Hampton Roads, but up here in Faifax County, they wouldn't wait a heartbeat to pull you over for that!

I was selling it and had some buyers but due to the stupid freeze plug giving way shortly after I posted the ad, nobody wanted it. It's still available if someone waves some cash in my face.

As for cops, I'm currently running Mississippi tags on her so I doubt that I will have any probs from them.

I'd like to see how you mounted them too. I have been thinking about doing this on my big block hood. I was worried about the heat though.

Looks good. I'm planning to use some small 6in tubes in the ram Air nostrils to light them up red at night. Working on the details so they can be mounted w/o blocking any air flow. Thinking about the top in the back courner. That is high enough that the tube should not be directly visible and its against the water baffle, so it will not cause any air flow restrictions. Its hard to get in to access to the inside of the ram air though. Got to have small limber hands and find away to work against gravity.

I used to like neons, but now I don't. Its a neat idea to have the neons in the nostrils. Neons are not rice. Rice just uses neons, and so do hotrods, classic cars, new cars, etc. Everyone uses them. Cops are not a fan of them either.

ya rice is if you have a red car and use orange neons. or a white car in your case and have some yellow, some green and some white. thats rice. all one color and nicely placed so you don't see the light just the glow is cool, not rice

Good idea. Looks good on a white car. Would look better if you could take those ugly orange turn signal lenses (all of us firebird guys are stuck w/ em) out and get clear ones. Still, it looks good. I bet chicks love em.

stuck w/ em? I'm working on making my own clear ones. :-) LOL I'll post pics in the next week or so. I'm gonna try clear and red to match the car.

If you look underneath your hood, you'll see 4 holes near the hood latch(2 holes on each side). All you have to do is remove the 2 nuts(5/8") and the covers come out. I then used aluminum foil so that the light has something to shine off of. I then installed 2 4" neon tubes in the nostrils using clear silicone to seal any electricals and to also mount them. I then routed the wiring to the drivers side feed the wires through the hood and to the back by the hinges. From there, I just routed the wire through the firewall and to my defroster switch (defroster does not work). I'll take pics of the setup when there is some daylight.

Thats what Shannon (redraif) did on hers...she cut the lenses out of some 80s sedan in the junkyard.

I like neons that are the same color as the car. I can't stand yellow trim on a car unless the car is yellow.

I like the idea of cops using neons at night to make themselves more visible. The decals on the squad cars are reflective at night so you can see them. I was travelling back to College at 4:00 A.M. doing 60 in a 30 zone when I saw the reflective police decal on a squad car about to turn in the direction I was traveling enough.

Needless to say, had I not seen that cop, I would not have been able to discretely slow down and I would have gotten a ticket.

I think it's pretty sweet.

Though I agree, it's hard to tell from the pic, but make sure the tube itself isn't visible. And I like the green on white thing, looks cool.

I think it looks okay.
Try blue. Blue looks better on a white car.

Put a 3 foot wing on it and I will verbally abuse you.
Underhood neons don't change the outward appearance enough to warrant a rice call.

That wouldn't work, because it's not really a static definition like that, it's too opinionated.

Many on this board think "not stock" and "rice" are synonymous.

I personally call rice when I see non-functional "mods" such as non-functioning hood scoops or wings taller than the car on a FWD vehicle that they claim helps them with downforce, or stickers all over a car of stuff the person doesn't even have. Other than that it's just a matter of taste.

Looks pretty good Although I'd experiment w/ diff. colors, dunno about the green. Anyone know a good way to difuse the light w/ a filter or something so you can't see the bulb?? is there some kinda plexi that's 1/2 opaque that acts as a diffuser one can buy at depot or something? I hate it when you can see the bulb

They do make a neon string. That could work. Just glue it in place with some high temp stuff and the problem should be solved.

Honestly after dealing with the stuiff I don't think it will work. I'm sure many of you have seen the neon shots of my interior from my site. Well those lines that glow are the string lights. They are not really neon, but fiberoptic like strings. They do not produce a glow that will shine unless the string is directly visible. I would have loved to tuck mine out of site to produce a glow, but it did not work. In fact i'm thinking about ditching them unless I can get them to lok red in the day time. The rubber coating on them is orange and it drives me nuts. All the companies that sell neons have orange and call it red. Maybe I should comtact a fiberoptice company and get some real red.

It is actually hard to see the neon tube itself because I have it positioned under on of the slots and also the grid helps hide it also.

I think it looks okay. Try blue. Blue looks better on a white car.
I thought of doing blue because My car has a blue pearl in the paint and clear coat but the cops would be bothering me every time they would see me. I'm going to be repainting my car with a white and green pearl and the ground effects dark green. I was also thinking about two green racing stripes that would start where the neons are and would fade into a dark green that would match the ground effects. Still tossing the idea but the prepping and sanding starts next week.

The green glow coming from under the hood makes the car look like it's nuclear-powered. Kinda like a Homer Simpson accident, only not in a bad way.
