Ground effects for my '89 Formula???

Hi I've got a white '89 Firebird Formula 350, and lately I've been thinking a lot about ground effects. I've seen one or two of my bodystyle with the pre-90 Trans Am effects and I think they look sharp, even if it kind of goes against what the Formula's about. I've attached a pic of one that I found. Right now the transmission's being rebuilt with kevlar clutches, Corvette servos, etc., but I can't help but think about the ole 'bird. What do you guys think? Ground effects or no?? And about how much would a set run me at a junkyard?? -Thanks

Formulas are BADASS cars just the way they are. BUT, check this out. That is the nicest looking car I have ever seen. I emailed him what the GFX were, I forget but I bet he could tell you.

I would say no to ground effects since most of the kits that are available don't really enhance the appearance more than without them. Formulas do look great from the factory with no ground effects. I just don't like the huge gap between the ground and the front bumper. I plan on adding just the front ground effects. Too much turbulence on the tires at highway speeds, which affects my steering.

Agreed.

I agree. I like the GFX. Without them, it's missing something.
Planning on doing them for the other bird too.
And I believe the whole thing weighs less than 20 lbs.
Some fat eh?
Worth it to me.

my noes cone is a little hosed so instead of getting another i'm going to save some scratch and buy me this kit imo its very nice i'm also going to add some fenders with the vents in them totaly destroying the purpose of the formula but the car isn't like hens teeth so i dont care.

Alright, the ground effects are out then, but I still want to do something to the exterior aside from a hood. Can someone please point me in a direction? Also, are those Welds on that black Formula in the pic?

The black formula that the link goes to is RC's car I think. Those ground effects used to be available from erebuni, and razzi might have them too. Formula's are nice without ground effects, but I agree that the bumperettes, and the rather high looking front end are distressing. If you really want ground effects, it isn't really that hard or expensive to get Trans Am ones. You might also look into the Kobel Predator kit for something a bit more unique.

Other cool mods you can do:

93 and up seats and console.
91 92 trans am tail lights.
Sweet rims. Zephyr's ws6 17 inchers come to mind.
High rise spoiler or 4th gen style spoiler.
the 93 to 97 ram air hood looks great on a formula.

Of course, there are many other things you can do. Question is, what is your vision for the car, and how much you willing to spend?

I like that Mecham spoiler, and if you get some made I want to know about it; unless they're $450 like the fiberglass replacements, which is absolutely ridiculous by the way. If I can't find a cheaper spoiler soon I'm going to take it to a bodyshop and have it fixed and painted. I've thought about the 93-97 ram air hood or a cowl, and the 93 and up interior. For the console, it has to be out of a 6 speed to fit, right? The 'bird ran fine until the transmission went out (now it's off getting a rebuild with Corvette servos and kevlar clutches...mwaa haaa haa), and the engine's still strong *knock on wood*, so I want to make it beautiful before I pump money under the hood of the ole girl. As of right now, I'm a college student and don't really have that much to put into it anyway. I thought of stripes, but I know they'd be hideous, especially with the stock hood, so I think I'm just going to buy the factory sticker kit and put on it. And I'd love to get some 15" chrome wheels, like Cragars or Welds, very cheap. If anyone knows where to get a decent spoiler at a decent price, or some good-lookin' 15s, holla back.
