Fourth Generation Dash

Ok.. after extensive searching of the archives i come to you the members that make up this board.... I have completed many search string in any and all combinations i can think of but yet have come up with inconclusive results... Obviously it can be done, it has been before but what all is required to install a fourth gen dash into an third gen, subject in hand here is a 1989 Trans Am and a 19996 Trans Am interior... Any and all info is much appreciated...

I'd say you're diggin deep into a well with no water.

The seats are no problem. The center counsel needs only minor tweeking, but the dash?

I'll bet your one of the (if not the only) few that will try it and have results.

From what I gather:

Most things bolt up...a little bending here, a little cutting there, etc.

You will have to rewire the guages, or find a good equivalent.

Fourth gen heater controls are a no go. Best bet is to redo the ducting and just leave the third gen heater core in.

There is a lot of computer and electrical components under the third gen dash. You'll have to mount this stuff somewhere under the fourth gen one.

You shouldn't need to change the steering column, should line up fine.

Door panels require a little work, and are not an exact fit, but line up pretty well. You will need to re-line up the handles though.

Mostly that's it. The hardest part of the swap, like most swaps, is not taking out the old dash and fitting the new one up, but in the time it takes to do all the little things, and making sure you do the job right the first time. Expect to sink some time into lining things up, making sure the new dash is sturdy, and rewiring everything.

What type of information were you using in the search fields?


There is an entire website out there dedicated to doing this swap.
And just recently U R SOFA KING did it.
And it was a huge thread.

I surprised you couldn't find it. It has been covered 4,672,994 times.

But.

Yes, it is alot of work. A lot of things will fit, but they do not bolt in.

All I knwo of that bolts in is, the seats, and some of the consoles.


And the rear view mirror....

Yeah man, try some better search words. Look for the post by Sofa King. I did alot of research and posted alot of pics in that one. As long as the dash and console are from same interior models (93-97 and 98-02) it will be fine. Mixing parts (say 93 dash and 98 console) will come out weird with spaces everywhere. Also, its alot easier with a Manual console. Everything in he 4th gen dash can be wired to work with the 3rd gen stuff. Just takes time. I planned to start my swap pretty soon here (2000 black T/A interior) into my 92 B4C but I just it today. Didnt make sense ripping apart a collectors car. So now I'm on the lookout for a good project 3rd gen again. Hopefully I'll find a hardtop with no rust ....
