Throw that air cleaner away now. I and several others have had a carb backfire, and it melts and gets sucked right into the carb.

I've had braided sleeving, which after I got some braided hoses the sleeving looks cheap.

The real braided hoses look great IMO.

Your engine after picture looks much better than before. By the way, listen to Mark, he's telling the truth on the braided sleeves!!

Better product I replaced my fuel lines with steel braided line after the regular rubber lines split open. Expensive stuff but worth the quality and safety.

kinda looks like its turning an air pump, I dunno, I wouldnt think a carbed engine would have one.

It does turn the AIR pump. My 84 LG4 (q-jet 305) & 87 LB9 (TPI 305) both had that outermost pulley groove on the water pump to turn the AIR pump.

really.. I would have never thought a carburtated motor to have an air pump, does it pump the air into the manifolds or just the cat? or am I wrong on both accounts?

the haynes manual explains how it works .... i think from what i understand is that it will pump air into the cat until it warms up then push the air through the exhaust. I dunno, its confusing ..... very inefficent ... and clutters up the engine bay. 70's smog reducing ideas that were still in effect.

Looks better, what solutions did you use? Just water? When i cleaned mine i used a degreaser and simple green.

And yea, that air filter is bad news. YOu can get a spectre 14x3 open element for 15 bucks. It will make it look better and i'd feel safer using that. Not only does it melt if your carb backfires. But after awhile the foam breaks apart and gets sucked in.
