i have a timslip scanned in but the text is extremely light and unreadble in most places... is there a way to darken the text and clear it up.. like with photoshop?

 

Fool around with the brightness and contrast. That might help a little and another thing you can do as well is convert it to greyscale and then fool around with the brightness and contrast. You can also try making a multiply layer.
