Custom interior project underway - any thoughts?

This is going to be a 4 step project and should be done by fall of this year (or whenever I can afford to go further). This is a quick list I threw together but all the basics are covered. I'll be adding custom touches here and there, such as raised "bowties" and things like that. I also plan on geting a 145 MPH guage cluster and converting it to LED (all red or if I get crazy: red speedo, white volt, oil, and temp, blue tach) What do you think of my list?

NOW
 Headliner – red tweed
 Sunvisors – black tweed with red stitching
 Rear Speaker Covers – black tweed
 Armrests – black tweed
 Vinyl strips on door panels – dyed black

NEXT
 Cupholders – black tweed
 Console lid – black tweed (or red, what would look best?)
 Emergency brake lever grip – black with red stitching
 Shifter grip – black tweed with red stitching

THEN
 Console fabric replaced with red tweed
 Heater vents in console replaced with black ones
 Black floormats with red stitching
 Kneepad covered in red tweed

LAST
 98+ TransAm seats, front and rear, done in black tweed with red inserts, black gets red stitching, red gets black stitching, maybe some sort of embroidery on the headrests or something

***ALL STITCHING WILL BE DONE IN THE OPPOSITE COLOR OF THE FABRIC. ALL STITCHING DONE TO RED TWEED WILL HAVE BLACK STITCHING. ALL STITCHING DONE TO BLACK TWEED WILL HAVE RED STITCHING***

***Other custom touches will be added as I go. The very last step, which will probably be late 2003 to mid 2004, will include red tweed door panels with raised flames, and the console lid will also get the same flames. I will also have custom work done in the rear hatch area.***

Are you going to do all this yourself or have someone else do it?
Also have you looked into tweed much? While it may be popular and look cool is very poor durability wise especially when it has the sun beating down on it. Its too much tweed for me, but its your car and it sounds like you have some cool ideas. Go for it.

Tweed will hold up much longer than the factory stuff, and WAY longer than velour. Nothing will last forever though.

A well know custom interior guy will be doing my car. I plan to help and try to learn something in the process. This guy is my old neighbor. He does almost all the great custom work in the southeast. Can you tell I'm excited?

I didn't even think about adding flames to the headliner! I might do that! Thanks for the idea

One thought for you.... (Cool ideas by the way. I can"t wait to see it)...Ok if you put tweed where you are going to have a body part resting...arm rest, console lid, knee pad...please remember that these areas will get dirty pretty quick. You may want them to be done in black. It should be easier to clean. Though they will look dustier quicker. Though, I think the red might get stained easier. I have seen some tweed interiors over time and the door handles typically look like crap as they get older. They pick up oil and dirt...and end up stained. Now these are mostly in the lowriders and minitrucks... Alot of these local guys don't care for the vehicle like they should. Show it for a season and then rag it out. They mistreat it and it gets all dirty. I would see if you can scotchguard it or something to prevent oil from your skin from transfering. Just a thought. Sounds like it will be nice...want it to last a good long while.

Maybe you know this.....but...

IF you plan on driving the car after this, get ready to do it AGAIN. Buddy of mine is BIG into the street rod scene, and he does interior work for these guys....he talks everyone OUT of getting tweed, if they plan on driving the car alot. It's NOT durable at all. A later model cloth would hold up alot better. My wife's '96 GP has 125k miles on it, and the seats are still perfect, and we are NOT easy on that car.

At least someone backed me up on this, as I said tweed is not durable at all. Not that we are trying to put down your ideas but just trying to let you know its not that great. I just redid my whole interior in cloth and it should last a long time, i lot longer than tweed. Have you really looked at tweed? Its basically just just like cloth woven together, it doesn't really have a backing to hold it together.

I've never heard of anybody having problems with tweed, but it doesn't matter cause this car will soon be retired to ocassional driving. I'm going to buy a 4th gen or a C4 Vette and use it as my daily driver and the Camaro will be my custom/show car.

Redraif, I'll see you in April I guess.....at Reynolds. I should be close to halfway done with it by then. How's the new TA coming along?

We are plugging along...hoping to get a drivers fender this weekend, so we can start priming. Then its $ time...sub frame connectors and a roll bar. Then we will work on trying to convert it to a targa...Now if I could find a notch back for cheap....

Hey if you are ever up in our neck of he woods let me know and we can get together and show you the TA....Plus I would love to see how the interior looks as it comes along...

I'm in Thomaston sometimes, it's like halfway between Jonesboro and Reynolds. I'm sure you've been there before, US 19 runs right through the middle of it. How is Joe's car coming along?

It looks like alot of people dont like my interior plans. That's ok though. If we all liked the same thing the world would be a sick, sad place. It's going to set my car off from the rest and I'm going to like it, that's all that matters right
