I made a CAI

Its not done yet. The PVC is temporary, will be painted black until I get a piece of metal tubing to take its place. I dont like how heavy the PVC is.

Anyways here are some shots of it installed in the car. The pieces are pretty heavy duty stuff, cost total about 25 bucks.

And my badass polishing job once again

Looks good. Should look much better when painted black and even better when you replace it with metal. Is the metal going to be polished also?

suncoast makes a box that will allow your ram air hood to be functional.. SD or MAF.

MAF is just as easy to make a cai, just minus about 6" of tubing for the MAF to be.

It's not rocket science.

PVC is a good starting point and I think you will like the metal one much better. My first one was PVC until I switched to an aluminum piece.

TPI looks fantastic.:hail:

I'm starting to get the parts for my CAI....also out of PVC...the setup you have there is nice....its simple and effective. What size tubing did you use, and does the middle white piece have shaved off flanges? How did you make it all stay together all strong? Any resin, or did you just use those clamps that I see in the pictures? Also, I'm particularly intrested in the piece that goes into the intake...where did you get that piece? Maybe my eyes are tricking me but that looks custom made for that purpose specifically. Sorry for all the questions, I just dont want to screw this up and have my CAI falling off on the highway at 70mph. Any help would great. Thanks.

I got every piece from Home Depot.

Its all in the "Pipe" section. The white piece is simply a cut piece of 3" PVC pipe. The rest is rubber tubing found in the same section. All the pieces are hard and hold themselves together. No resin was needed.

Thanks for your help.....if the white piece was 3" in diameter, then i take it the black ends were 4" in diameter? or 3 1/2?

guess I'll be the first to say that it looks cheezy, maybe it would be better if you had the TBI aka toilet bowl injection to match with the sewer piping , ya know , to complete the "look"

should have made that and get it to fit then remove it all in one piece and went to the nearest decent exhaust shop where they could have easily made it all out of metal for you using your potato gun intake as a template. would probably cost around $100 and it would look like it belongs on there

Adam...

I meant the flanges on the elbows....sorry I wasnt clear. Anyways, just to clarify, those hose clamps are all I need around the flanges on the black pieces to hold everything together? They'll be enough to hold the middle piece in? I have to figure something out with my MAF also...I have to work that in somehow...

Painted- Daytime shots.

For some reason it looks like its dull on one side. Im gonna go check that out after work. Maybe Ill put another coat of paint on it. could just be smudges from when i put it on though.

Phantom - The rubber pieces are pretty thick and hold their own shape, and the clamps will clamp everything together tight enough that it will just sit in place. Hope that helps

btw, where they connect after the throttlebody, there is a short piece of pvc under there that each side is clamping to. Thats how it stays hooked together seamless looking.

If you can find a tube like mine, it will fit your engine bay perfectly. My friend found it and put it on his 90 Formula 350.

I was skeptical at first, but once I saw the pics I must say well done. But my real question is, has it made a noticable improvement?

now with you air filter being right by the hot radiator picking up hot air from that and the motor how is it a cold air intake? from what i understand it would be a cold air intake if it was isolated from everything else putting the intake in it's own little world taking in the cold unheated air from the outside and pusing it through your filter that way. but it does look good just needs to be finished imo

What kind of air do you think it got when it was here:

Eventually I plan on making a shell around the filter so it pulls mostly from the fenderwell.

The piece that goes from the throttle body to the pvc pipe where did you get it? I've looked at home depot for a piece like that but havn't found one yet.

Ressurecting the thread....

Been looking at these PVC cold air things for awhile. I'm interested in making something like this.

Been to Home Depot to look at PVC pipes and they only sell them in 10 foot lengths. Is this what you guys have bought and then just cut them to size? The 10 foot pipe is only about $9 or so but I'm not sure I could fit one in the car let alone cut it (a saw maybe?)

Would this be a legal thing to do in CA?

Guess I could always take it off for the stock stuff at testing time.

Thanks.

No. In Ca you have to have all the crap that is legal and you have to have the little stickers saying it is legal. A buddy of mine made one for his jap crap and got pulled over for racing, then they checked out the car and gave him another ticket for his home made CAI.
I just say take it off every two years when you have to smog it.

At Pep Boys yesterday I saw an 18" aluminum pipe that woulda been perfect. Except it was only 2 1/4" in diameter. That's the biggest they had.

Maybe I'll stop by Autozone in a bit.

Damn smog laws in CA are stupid. Who cares what the heck is under the hood if the exhaust is clean? Especially in this case, its just a plastic pipe! Dumb, dumb, dumb.

I want to make something like this for my 5.9L Durango but it wouldn't be as easy to put the stock stuff back on. On my GTA it would be a snap.

I used to live in Ventura County in Oxnard / Port Hueneme.
That was back in 86 before I moved to Iceland.

this is my setup. 3" PVC with 90* elbows at the ends from home depot painted black. i didn't have to buy the whole section. i brought the factory setup with me and they cut it for me. looks good IMO.

I asked Home Depot if they cut them to size and the guy said I'd have to buy the whole thing. I think your setup looks good too.

Anyway, I went to Autozone and found an 18" long, 3" diameter aluminum exhaust pipe. One end is slightly flared to about 3.5" but that should be ok.

Bought some aluminum polish too Now I just need a way to connect it to the throttle body.

It's not going on my car either. It was a concept I had back when I was doing the TPI swap. I coudn't afford the $300 SLP Dual CAI at the time so I was going to use this. Then I found a slightly used SLP unit and put that on my car.

I love this pic of my old setup,

Have you done yours yet with the Autozone tube? How did you join the metal tube to the throttle body?

Pics would be nice.

My car is in storage so I'm gonna take my time. I'll probably just polish the tube next week.

yeah i did my cai already with the auto zone pipe, had to cut off about 3 inches if i remember correctly, with a hack saw, used the stock angle connector that came on most later thirdgen tpi formulas/ trans ams, then a 3" 90degree angle rubber hose and connected that to my MAF Sensor then to my filter

I made a CAI too

I used pipes from http://www.westcoastbending.com that I got for about $12 each shipped (purchased mild steel pipes in bulk for possible future products to sell). Then I used silicone adapters from http://www.bakerprecision.com to complete the installation. If I were doing it again (and I will), I'd be placing the MAF closer to the TB to get it away from the coolant lines.
