paint help
ok so heres the deal, the paint on my hood and roof are fading (cheap van nuys) and i wanna get those two parts fixed. i brought it to a paint shop and the guy said 1000 to repaint the hood and roof! theres no way i can afford that right now (in highschool w/ part time job). now the guy told me it was the clear coat on the car that was bad, is there anyway to just strip off the clear coat and have the clearcoat redone or do i have to get the hood completely repainted to get rid of the fade? and is there any way to repaint it cheaper? sorry for the long post and thanks in advance for any help

the cheapest way is to try to do it yourself if you feel confident enough. i'll be repainting my drivers side door this summer cuz i know someone else will charge an arm and a leg.

also, just simply keep looking around for other places that will do it cheaper. BUT...a lot of people will say "you get what you pay for." who knows, you might just get lucky.

i'd try to do it myself but the color won't come out right since the new paint would be off from the original paint on the rest of the car. the reason why i went to the place i did was b/c my mom's car was in a couple of accidents and she brought it there and they did excellent work on the car, you couldnt even tell it was in an accident. they mixed the paint perfectly, but i'm gonna keep on looking around for a cheaper price. i'm looking for a place that can do the hood and roof for maybe 300 dollars as long as it's not maaco.

WARNING WARNING... in the automotive's departement... you get what you pay for... be wary... 1000 is a tad expensive... I would go for around 700 bucks... but 300 is REALLY low... I am not sure you'd be better off doing it for 300 then needing to do it again in 6 months... if it is just the clear fading off... I suggest you wait and save your money, it won'T rust right away... it is my 2 cents...
GM had problems with the paint "delaminating" on our cars. Mine did it and I had the whole car repainted because it just got worse and worse.
What will happen is you will get the roof and hood repainted then the sides will start to peel. Its just a matter of time. GM used a water based primer and it dries out over time and loses its adhesion.
Wait til you can get the whole car painted or go to Maaco and get it all done on the cheap until you save up some money for a quality job.

GM paint
Wasn't it cause they applied very thin layers of clear coat that it did that? anyway, that's what I heard... but what IROC57TPI
said is true.. the rest will peel soon enough...

it depends on the amount of work there is to do to your car really... but here in Quebec.. we pay 37 CND an hour for a bodyshop... and they should ask you for about 40 hours... plus material I'd say about 2000 bucks CND... ask around for quotes... keep my number in mind and go for the lowest, yet most adequate price

I would not go to maaco and get a cheapy job, becuase that will make it that much harder to paint when you get ready to put your quality job on there. You have to take all there crap off, plus what was on there. Besides, maaco will look like crap anyway.
