I used to own an '85 TransAm and I like the way it looked (and still do) way more than any other year I've seen. I think the rims (inverted honeycome) were the only thing I would have changed on it.

I think they all have their advantages.
If you buy an early model thirdgen, you have a perfect project car that in most states very soon will not have to follow emissions standards. Time for a HUGE engine, body/paint work, and an interior to die for.
The 85-90 have beautiful looks, and the MAF system on the TPI models makes modding easier for those not looking to go too nuts with the intakes/cam. Do you realize the 1985 model year is now 18 years old? You'll still be buying a car thats rare to most viewers.
91-92....what can I say. I love the look of the 91-92 birds (especially the TA and the firehawk). The nose is something you just grow to love the more you look at it. The 91-92 camaros are arguably the best looking of all the thirdgen camaro years, with the swooping new gfx package. Add to all this the SD system on the TPI equipped models and the most hp out of all the thirdgen years.
It's all what you want to do. I love my 87 GTA like no other, but I'd love an early firebird to extract all of my firebird fantasies on (455 Pontiac Engine and a 4th gen interior swap
).....and have a friend with a beautiful 92 polo green vert camaro. All thirdgens are equally wonderful....just buy one you can afford to fix, because as things get older...they cost more to maintain.

You can't say what looks better as general case. Everyone has different tastes.
I will say this. I think T-tops look better than no T-tops. GFX on Camaros look better than without, but I have seen some sport coupes that prove otherwise. I am indifferent on whether Ground effects look better than no ground effects on Firebirds.
I don't like the rear ground effects and wing on 91-92 Firebirds.
I think 91-92 Zs look the coolest.
My favorite Trans Am is the 85-90 style.
That's just my personnal preference.

J's t/a: you have my absolute favorite pre-86 firebird... the firehawk wheels and t/a fender vents make it look real athletic. i love the way it looks.
in general, i love most thirdgens. the only things i dont like are the black strips on the 86 (?)-90 base firebirds and formulas bumpers, and the camaros without gfx...they just kind of seem incomplete to me....

I think quite possible the thirdgen that is the least popular would have to be the berlinetta camaros, and all of the early cars equipped with the iron duke.
I like the non-GFX firebirds from 91-92, but the 85-90s if they have GFX...in any case I think the 85+ cars beat out the 82-84s in 80% of all cases....but I think any clean looking 82-84 can look better than a beat 85+ car....basically its all about how good of condition its in for me.

Here in VA when your car turns 25 you can get antique tags that exempt you from the mandatory state inspections.. not sure about other states.. seems funny my car will be an "antique" soon..
Thanks again for the good comments, I sure hope you guys still like the car when I put the ram air hood on.. I wanted to get an effective induction system for the LT1..

Yep, I hear some states have that law. Here, in NE, I believe it's also 25 years and I 'can' get antique plates. One time fee forever, but a limit on mileage per year--don't know how they will know. But, right now it cost around 25 bucks a year to keep it registered and no emissions so I can't complain. Maybe it's time for an alchohol conversion, since it's 21.

For Camaros, I'd have to say that 85-87 would be my favorite set of years. The ground effects package, Z28/IROC badging, and wheels set them apart. I didn't really care for the 88-90 or 91-92 wheels, and I think that the 91-92 GFX package and high-rise spoiler broke up the clean lines of the car. I love sleekness, and the 85-87 years show that the best.
As far as Firebirds go, I can't really say. Probably 85-90.

The least liked thirdgens, I think would be '82-'85 6 cylinders....
For Camaros, I think '87's (when the third light was removed from the hatch) to '90 are the best looking.
I don't like the fake scoops on later cars, or the square upright rear wing, it cuts the flowing lines of the car. Just my opinion.
I think all years are nice, if the car is in top shape, or has been tastefully modified. Anything else, is just a matter of preferences, T-top's, coupes, ragtops, TBI's, TPI's...and best of all, we can more or less swap and change anything in our cars. Just make sure you keep it in good condition, and give it lotsa love...!
Hey J's T/A, what are the offset specs on your Ronal wheels? your ride looks awsome, think I'll look for some wheels like that for my "90 RS.
Cheers,
Thunderboy

Honestly I don't know the offset on the firehawk wheels.. I do know it is right on though the 275s rub less than my old 245s..they were specifically designed for thirdgens..
I bought them straight from SLP.. there are one or two camaros running them on the board.. I like them alot.

he decided to go with a 84 just like me, but he is not gunna slap the gfx on it. i am surprised that most people like the one with that black thing on it, looks so pointy! i dont like that style at all. but thats me.
thanks people

I used to like only '85-'90 style TA's for the most part....hated the '91-'92's...and didnt care for the '82-'84's. But you gotta realize that any car can look beautiful..I mean look at J's T/A...love it. But personally out of all of them I would buy an '88 or '89 gunmetal gray GTA 350 TPI w/t-tops...and then go out and find a powerbulge hood and then I got in my eyes my favorite looking third gen. But I find that I like certain parts of certain years more than others. I love the gfx on the '85-'90 TA's, love the powerbulge hood from the '82-'84 TA's and I love the "PONTIAC" taillights from the '91-'92's along with the GTA wing on the '91-'92's.

85-90 really have a few things going for them, but 82-82 are just so awesome. And the 91-92's are just tooo IMHO girlie. I dont mean that as insult at all. I just see the body style as femine, being more curvy. I do not mean it was designed to appeal to females more, I just think it sort of lost it's roughedness... I dunno hard to explain.

82-84 and 91-92 are my favs, i am biased towards 84 t/a's but i also think its cool how aside from the 83 pacecars, they are unique from any other year, and the 82-84 t/a hood is just massively better than the 85-92 (and functional)

Every model has its pros and cons.
My favorite body style is the 91 Trans Am, or any other year like it. My favorite engine would be the T-ram

. To me, the 85-90 camaro cars have much more of a "muscle car" look, and the 91-92 cars are more sporty, if you know what I mean. It's kind of synonymous to the early second generation z-28 compared to the later ones. More "do-dads" to put on your car doesn't always mean it will look better. But I personally like the 91-92 Z's the best, but I have seen some earlier ones that look absolutely stunning.

Ladies and Gentlemen,
We suffer from an embarassment of riches with our thirdgen Camaros and Firebirds.
Gfx or not, spoilers or not, I've seen examples of every year and model that knock my socks off. These are just the best looking cars GM has ever produced
