wire wheel on a bench grinder then some brakleen to clean em. then paint away with high temp paint.

or you could have them bead or sand blasted.

Please paint your drums black, or not at all.

I used a wire brush and then a friend offered to blast them. They came out about the same. I then used some of the rust convertor and then painted.

Sorry fyrelance, but I painted them red all the way around...drums too! I liked it. Matched the car. though in the next few weeks I'm going to be going to a disc brake rear, so it will be a non-issue!

Oh that's it, you just ruined your entire car by doing that. Geez what an abortion of a car, I can't believe you painted your drums. OMG OMG OMG. R<x>ice! R<x>iiiiiice!!! Save the paint drums for the mad tYte Hon-duhs!

j/k of course, just making fun of previous posts.

I don't think painted drums are too bad, especially when body color, but just not my thing really... I really like painted calipers though! All depends on the situation I suppose. It'll be sweet with four-wheel disc. I wish I had that. What all is involved in doing your conversion?

:sillylol::sillylol::sillylol:

On the rear conversion...well first you must find a disc rear from a 3rd gen. Prices vary...$400-500, usually. We got a much better deal though! Even had the 3.73s I wanted. The only down side, not a posi. The 88 and newer, or is it 89 and newer...ok anyway...they have good calipers. They are usually more expensive though. The pre 88/89 cars have rear calipers that are prone to get stuck and not brake. I got a 84 rear. Something malfunctions in the inner piston. But there is a $35 rebuilt kit from GM, because this was a recall problem. So we have to rebuilt mine. Also, you will also need the proportioning valve from the disc rear car. Now you can bend you rear brake line to work, or you can just get the one of the donor car. We got it off the donor car, just in case! Get the E brake cables!

Then its a matter of a pretty straight forward swap. Just like any rear end swap. Biggest pain will be the prop valve and bleeding the brakes!

My other big score was the other 84 disc rear for the 82. $40 for the housing, master cylinder, prop valve & cailipers. I had to get axles and new gears, a posi. Now I have to pay someone to set it up...by the end probably $4-500. So either way thats your cost!

So that is the short version. So not a bad conversion at all! Its also pretty easy to upgrade to the 4th gen calipers on our disc housings though. Eventually I will add a posi, but for now this works!
