My polished vette covers....
After many many many many many many many many many many many ........ many many many many hours of sanding I have completed one vette cover.
The results... you can see. They look like chrome. The downside... the casting in magnesium is not the greatest and as a result there are some black marks... look at the pictures.
They still look great. I don't know if I will keep them this way, dip them in chrome, anodize them blue... Dunno.
My plans originally were to finish polishing them (as I have) and then paint the little grooves blue. Maybe I'll still do that. We'll see.

I just don't like using that paint stripper stuff...
Ah well I guess I'm happy for now, but I still might go the anodizing blue or dipping in chrome route.

Did you use Trpoli and White Rouge on them? If not try some, as it will cut literally hours off of your work. With those compounds, you do not need to sand past 400 grit wet. You will be amazed... I just tried it last week and I will NEVER go back.

Nice job
The black stuff in the #6 pic is called "gas" aka air pockets in the alluminum, theres absolutely nothing you can do to get rid of it other than making that area look as good as possible. The more and more you sand on that area the worse or better it might get, I would just sand a little more and see what you get. If it gets worse then just shine it up the best you can.

just by hand most of it, except a palm sander to sand the paint off...

they look pretty good.
i would chrome them, anodize them, or how about spray painting them flat black?
