Here are the latest pics of the 406, and a few of my 86 z28. I went through the engine again this winter after all my troulbe with breaking pushrods i figured i better rip it apart and fix it. I ended up replacing a lot of stuff. I put in new rings, all new bearings, got new pushrods, guideplates, rocker arms, new intake manifold, and screw in rocker arm studs. I also am in the process of changing it over from a t-5(that broke) to a built up th350 with a B&M stall converter. I also added a 92 front ground effect, and a 92 grill. Well enough talking here are some pictures. Tell me what you guys think

Got bored and set the heads and intake on... just to see what it would look like, i ordered my new Chevy racing valve covers today, dont like the old chrome edelbrocks.

haha no they are still there, just no lensees in right now, i am trying to decide whether to go clear or tint the ones i have...?

hahah yeah i barely stuffed it all under the hood, my hood kind of bows up in the middle, a nice new SS hood will be on there in the future, after i get everything else worked out. I'll loose the "sleeper" look though.. although you can tell the car isnt stock by all the gauges inside and the rumble of the cam. but it still looks almost stock

thanks guys... I ran into some trouble tonight though! I got my heads all together and i put them on torqued them all up and dropped my pushrods in and then i started setting all my rocker arms onto the studs and i was thinking hmmm those pushrods look kind of short but didnt think anything of it. So i got them all on there and got the motor on TDC #1 and went to adjust the valves and i kept on cranking down and cranking down and it wasnt getting much closer to the pushrod.... do i need longer pushrods since i have guideplates and screw in rocker studs? They are brand new stock lenght GM pushrods, as well as GM guide plates and screw in rocker studs... What do you guys think?

Oh yeah by the way some specs on the engine nothing crazy just a torque monster. Im guessing around 380 HP with some new heads easily 400.

i know what u mean. i wouldnt. but the auto switch is proly perfect for his setup since the T5 will explode with that 400. T56 swap can be pricey too.

 

haha yeah yeah i know, the t-5 broke from the 406, it pops out of first gear everytime you take off, and i had a th350 laying around and my dad had just about all the parts to rebuild it so all i had to buy was the torque converter so i made out pretty good, it is only temporary until i can save up for a 6 speed or a tremec 5 speed, i am leaving all the clutch pedals in the car though. I just want to be able to beat on it and not have to worry about walking when something breaks, everytime i would get on it with that t5 in there i would be worried about it shattering open.

 

UPDATE: Well i had to get rid of my guideplates.... it was either get rid of them or get my heads machined so i could use them, so i ditched the guideplates but kept the screw in rocker studs. The engine is now in the car with just about everything on it, i have to leave the drivers side header off for now so i can run some transmission cooler lines. How do you guys think it looks? I dont know whether i like the black or the old oragne better?

Did you open up the pushrod holes when you installed the guide plates? If you did you will need to find a way to keep the pushrods straight, like self guided rocker arms. If they don't have a means of staying straight, a lot of bad things can happen.

I was wondering. Does everyone delete thier cruise control and their windshield washer fluid tanks?

Every pic I see of a third gen engine bay on this site has those items removed. It would save alot of room under the hood.

 

nice car man and Id say stick with black, it goes with your car. I still have my washer tank and cruise because I need the washers for inspection and the cruise kicks *** on trips.

And no i did not open up the pushrod holes when i had the guideplates on, i bought the guideplates and everything and i put them on the engine while it was still on the stand and then i realized that they would not work unless i shaved about 1/4 of an inch off the base of where the rocker arm studs go. So i ditched that idea and just used the screw in rocker studs. Yeah i like the black a lot better too, that orange just wasnt doing it for me. The transmission is now in the car, went in very smoothly, kinda scary how smooth it went in, but i need to figure out what kind of mount i need to get, i got that B&M torque arm mouint so i could install my TH350 and im not quite sure what torque arm bushing i need, if anyone knows anything about this can ya help me out a little?
