how much is a new paint job

ok d00ds, i have a 1986 firebird trans am. The silver paint job is continually coming off and patches. i need a quick paint job. I have found one place called Spray Glo that will give me chrysler platinum for $200. They also insure the paint for 1 year from cracking or peeling off. I've not found any info on maaco. Anyone have an idea on cost? Is $200 a good deal for a one color body paint job? If not what is a good price?

uhh, that's cheap as hell. the labor involved in sanding the car alone should cost $200 at any other place.....i'd keep looking, you won't be pleased for long with the results....even a 'quick' paint job should cost $500 or so

umm. decient paint and supplies at THEIR cost for the whole car should cost near that...

meaning they probly do a halfass prep job and use substandard paint....

i would keep looking and saving... because to be honest

id rather drive a POS looking car for a couple more months, and then have it look GREAT and drive that for awhile, then to have a bad new paintjob on it, and never have it look great, and it ends up looking like **** in a few months/a year

Keep them attatched with the minimum amount of fastners so it's easy to take them out when you get there. And if your going in the daytime, you'll really only need the tails since it's a Firebird and the headlights are down in the day, depending on your local laws though.

alright thanks. Got one more question. Should i paint my spoiler the same color as the body? I have a black spoiler and i'm getting a platinum color. Because i'm gonna have to take it off first if not.

Yes, paint to match. Only time that looks good is on old Mopars and when it's the hood, lol. Well, to me anyway. If not it would look odd to me. Like you bought a spoiler as an afterthought and didn't get it painted yet.

ok sorry about this but one more question. Is it absolutely neccesary to take off all weather stripping? i mean if i mess that **** up i'm pretty much screwed. I mean the t-top weatherstripping is in great condition and messing it up will set me back lots of money. I'm not going for the world best paint job in the world here. just a decent one to look good for a few years man.

ok i got one more question before i get my car painted. I have all the decals stil on my car. I mean the firebird emblem stickers. is there anyways to get them off without haveing to wreck the paint under it. Also with the trim(ones stuck by glue) i have to take that off i know. Is there anyways to take them off safely, and is there a way to put them back on.

the weatherstripping should be replaced afterward....... but its only glued in with gorilla snot, so if you're careful, you MAY be able to take it off and reuse it..

athough i would just get new weather stripping... trust me, with the tops off, ti will look much better

peel the stickers off so they dont paint over them... you can use a razor blade to lift the edge, and then peel them off, and some goo gone or WD40 will take off the remaining glue without harming the paint..

with trim, you just have to take it off carefully...

ummmm ok but the weather stripping was replaces a year ago by the original owner. So it doean't need to be replaced. So your saying its easy to take it out without harming it. Or should i let them mast over it or something.

how do i get rid of the front bumper cover sticker seen in the picture. Its way too bug to get it off with a razor. And i'm only 16 so i don't think i can buy a new bumper cover.

ok d00ds. i'm in interest for a paint job. Not anythign special a paint job. My paints faded lostits gleam and is chipped off in some places. Mainly in the pic above. Now the amont that may bet on thw t-top weatherstripping. Would it be absolutely stuck to the weatherstripping if it were to get on it? You couldn't just crack it by flexing it until it came off? Oh yeah the deep cracks in the pic i pisted above..... how do i remove them or are they just looking larger than they are by the sticker in that area? Has anyone been able to take that sticker off without a new bumper cover? I am on a teenager's budget, remember that one.

I would not get a 200 dollar paint job on your car. If you decide to keep it it will be that much more expensive and hard to paint when you can afford a new paint job. Because they will have to go and take off all the bull**** the place you are getting it painted at puts on it. Noone can do an even descent paint job for 200, not a shop anyway. I wouldn't do it, but that is just me.

well d00d with the coupon i have they give you a $200 paint job with a 2 year cracking and peeling warantee. Meaning if it cracks or peels they redo it for free. This is at a company called Spray Glo..... but its only in the southestern parts of the US. i could go to a $600-$200coupon=$400, and get a 4 year warantee. But all i'm able to spend is $400. thats what my dad is giving me for my bday.

here are specs of $200 one
Complete Exterior
Single Original Color
Primer-Sealer
Polyurethane Hardener Added
Hand and Machine Sanded to Remove Large Nicks and Scratches
2 Year Warranty (pro-rated) Against Peeling and Cracking

here are specs for $400
Complete Exterior
Single Original Color
Primer-Sealer
Acrylic Enamel Technology
Polyurethane Hardener Added
Hand and Machine Sanded to Remove the Majority of Nicks and Scratches
4 Year Warranty (pro-rated) Against Peeling and Cracking

those are direct frome their website.

Which one is really a better deal price wize? thanks in advance.

Just for the fun check out their best deal specs ($600)
Complete Exterior

spend a weekend going over your old paint with some polishing compound..

perhaps after that, you can wait a little longer until you have more money for better paint.

everyone with a later model 3rdgen has cali paint...

well long story short:

i got my 82 with fresh silver paint... but it was a cheap job.. looked great

8 months later, looked just OK....

year later, well, people started asking when i was going to paint my car... they would as "isnt that primer?"

so i buffed it... looked good for another 4 months or so..

then it went flat again.

cheap paint just isnt worth it... unless you're about to sell the car to some sucker.

good paint job? thats simple

quality materials ( ie good paint)
good prep work.

paintjobs are 90% prep work, and in the case of great paint 5% after spraying work.. who actually sprays the paint really doesnt even come into the picture, as long as they dont REALLY suck

ok what i'm saying is if they warantee these jobs for 2 years minimum.... wouldn't that mean they had to aleast done a good job prepping it.....

then next job double the price has a 4 year warantee.... its only $400 for me. why would that say they didn't do good prep work?

Hmmm I am 18 and I was once in your shoes... Just wanting a cheap paint job.

Listen, the paint job for 200 bucks is cheap. It will look like crap before the end of summer being in the sun all the time, your best bet is to wait.

But from your constant posting it seems you are dead set on getting this paintjob and you are waiting for a single person to say "Yeah, Shermin Williams paint for 200 bucks and a 2 year warranty is an awesome deal"

It isnt gonna happen.

This place is gonna do a mediocre job at best and in the long run you are not going to be happy. You will be lucky if they even take off the old paint and put down new primer, they will probably scuff up your current paint with sandpaper and paint directly over it.

Just go job hunting and wait 6 months untill you can afford a paint job you will always be happy with it. Not something which is gonna dissapoint you.

Just remember: You pay for what you get.

If the price is cheap then so is the quality level.

i guess i'll have to talk to my lil' bro friend's dad. He works at an auto body shop and said he'd give me half off of his estimate for $1500. i'm guessing that that would be the best i could do for now.

There's your answer right there. Get a pro body man to do it as a side job. If he'll do it for $750 and your dad's going to give you $400, you only have to come up with $350 and you get a nice paintjob instead of crap. Definitely the way to go.

thanks for that much credit. But now, if i were todo prepwork myself, what would all that be besides all the weatherstripping, lights, stickers, and moldings? What otherprepworkis there besides sanding it down?

Alright in the pic below i think that preparing it would be the hardest. I have paint chips atleast 1/2mm deep. I don't think you can sand it because its on plastic. If you can sand it what girit paper do i use. We have 3 Belt sander type things. If not sandable how would i go about making it paintable. Some d00d today told me something about bondo. What is it, Does it work?
thanks in advance
