Tail-Light Color/Scheme

Has anyone tried altering the color scheme/appearance of their stock 3rd Generation (Z28) tail-lights? I'm sure there are companies out there that might offer replacements, but I've yet to find the 'style' that I'm looking for.... and was curious to see if anyone tried this on their own?

I have the exact color scheme I'm after (in my head), but here's the hard part.... and that's trying to apply it to the stock lenses themselves. Anybody ever try this, and if so, any advice before I ruin my original IROC tail-lights LOL?

its legal, there many cars out there with red blinkers , you can have red/amber in the back and white/amber in the the front, no blue anywhere, no red in the front and no white for brake lights, everything else goes by state and/or its a gray area.

Thanks bro! Yeah... I just read through those posts, and got a pretty good idea on what to do, and how. But;

By removing the back panel from each individual tail light, rather than simply paint what I want painted... what is the best way to remove the amber from the lense, and get it to be clear (or white)?

I'm going to attempt to do it a little differently than those that posted, but it will require getting some lenses to be clear/white. Is it just a matter of lightly sanding the original amber paint from the lense?

I believe the amber color is in the plastic itself therefore not being able to get rid of it! The only way is to cover it up.

You're right, but I'm going to try -n- attempt to take the plastic casing off, then remove all the original paint from the inner factory lense. I can't get myself to paint the outside... although it might look good, everywhere I go I'll know it wasn't done the 'right' way....

Unless you meant it's in the glass??

The plastic isn't painted on the inside if I'm understanding you right. The plastic itself is actually orange. Break a peice off and its orange all the way through. The only way is to paint it or severely modify it.

I got ya!!!

I thought the plastic was painted only one side, I didn't know that the plastic actually came 'stained' orange from the factory...

Thanks man

I'm in the process of finishing my custom lights. Like you're saying, I wanted to change the configuration of the reflector colors to make it look different. And since everyone else just paints their ambers portions red I had to do something different. I based my design off some Japan aftermarket taillights made for a Lexus LS400 (the style of brake lights on that car is similar in design to our cars). I'm still working on the wiring for the sequential turn signals. You guys are correct that the plastics are dyed from the factory. So if a piece is colored, you cant make it clear. My choices were to make my own pieces, or use two sets of taillights and part them out. I ended up buying another set of stock 91-92 taillights for $25, and combining those reflectors with my current 91-92 taillights I was able to make my custom set. Once I get the wiring complete I'll be sure to get pics, and more importantly video of the lights in action (they are sequential afterall). If people like what they see I'm considering selling my lights to the 3rd gen community as a complete package (tailight bezels, LED lights, and sequential wiring) that will bolt in and require minimal wiring changes.

No real timeframe, I just mess with it when I get bored. Right now I'm trying to learn more about LED's and such. One of the main reasons I started this project is I want a better way to instigate races on the freeway. Sort of like how some guys flash their reverse and hazard lights at you when they want to race. I'm going to be doing something a bit different, and its very possible it will include the ability to form words on the LED strips that are being used for the sequential turn signals. Because of this idea, its now taking me longer to get this done. The sequential turn signal part is pretty much done. When I decide if I want to make more to sell I will guarantee that I'm not going to be overcharging for these lights. The price will all depend on how much it costs for me to make the lights. So far I'm about $130 into the project.
