Couple of quick paint questions
Well, I found the guys I am taking the vert to, they pretty much said they will do everything I want them to do, but I want to find out from you guys what would be the best process and coats etc...
Here's the story about the paint:
1988 Camaro SC Convertible
Originally painted Maui Blue, someone a few years before I bought it took it to maaco and they basically painted right over the old paint job and all my dor jambs are blue, the hood is starting to chip off to the blue and the engine bay is blue. Well, I pulled the engine, tranny, rear, interior, the works. I am going to have it brought down to the original primer and reshot, but what is the best procedure for me to tell them so I get the best job possible, not so that they do the cheapest possible
Basically here is what I thought:
Sand to primer
primer
2 coats paint
2 coats clear coat
color sand
Bu I have no idea if that is right and what little things should be done in there. I don't need show quality, but I want it to look like it came from GM that way and a good looking paint job all together.

Try asking some people who have had their car painted there. Make sure they are reptuable and use good quality paint.
When I painted my 85 I did 12 coats of paint
but that was a 1 stage paint job.

Well, the guys seem pretty stand up. They will let me come by and take pictures anytime I want. Also since it is a vert I think it may be a bit more difficult, but we will have to see. Painting the car red, just had the engine done and I didn't want to put it back in with a blue engine bay and a red and polished aluminum engine
With your polishing I hope to get this thing to perform as well as it looks.
Also isn't 12 coats a bit much? Ive heard of cracking on anything much more than 3. Not sure if I want to go with "heritage" stripes or not. I think they look good, but I may do flames instead.

12 coats was ok for my paint job since its just a base coat paint job. I sanded off quite a bit of that paint to get out any orange peel and then buffed it out to a high shine. Lol all down the drain though, freakin stray cats love to jump on my car and scrathc it
I reccomend you garage your car when its not in use. Flames are cool

I am moving at the end of this month (hence why after spending $1800 at summit I have to wait to get the SR out to you.) so that I will have a garage. Unfortunately, at work has to be parked out in the sun...

thats good that you will have a garage. Is the parking lot at work paved? When I worked at my old job we had a gravel lot
and some idiots decided to do a burnout on the gravel and slung rock all over the rear of my car. I will need to build another garage when I finish my 82, I will not have any animals messing up my paint.

Don't worry about too much paint going on, if you are using base coat, because it will depend on what color is going on.
Just remember, you have got to get enough color applied, to hide all of the primer.
The best way I know how to get a color to hide well, is to use a tintable sealer, just before the base coat goes on.
I wouldn't worry about it though, as you say, the shop that's doing the work looks to be of a high standard place, then I'm sure that the painters there, are all highly trained in the most current ways of applying the brand that is being used there.
I know I was, when I was the painter for a body shop, ASE and PPG certified
