Spoiler opinions apriciated.
Hey. I just found this great site after having my Camaro for a few months and it's really an asset to me. I found these forums and will probably be using them for a while talking to others about Camaros.
First a little about the car.
I bought this 1985 Berlinetta in September 2003 for $500. It had a recently rebuilt engine but a totally shot tranny. I rebuilt the tranny for $900 and I had an almost perfectly running Cam. I love this car. It's got some much I like about it.
Anyway, the day I get it back from having the tranny rebuilt, it gets stolen. You guys probably know how easy it is to steal these things, but I didn't know about until it was gone. It was recovered a week later and was absoletuely trashed. Took my radials, XM radio, intake maifold, and took a lot of the interior and ripped up the rest. Also, the biggest problem was that they totally trashed and destroyed the steering column. It took me three months to rebuild it, but I did. If anyone wants a solution to having your Camaro stolen, get a steel collar and go to a steel shop and have it welded around the column. You can paint it and make it look good and you won't have to worry about people busting your column and stealing your car.
Since I got my car back from being trashed I've been investing lots of money in restoring it and I'm almost back to where I started and maybe a little bit more. I recently found a great deal on a spolier, so I bought it. I absolutely LOVE it, but eveywhere I go, people tell me how stuipid it looks. I don't get it. Does it really look that wrong?
Soon, it will be getting a new Scheib paint job to Corvette yellow with a pair of white racing stipes that also go over the spoilers. Anyone have any ideas or suggestions, I'd loveto hear them. Thank in advance!

Sorry to hear about the mishaps with the car, never fun having something like that happen. But in regards to the spoiler, from that angle in all honesty, looks like a big N-O. You'll probably get a lot of trash about any spoiler made out of metal on a thirdgen, but maybe a shot from the rear side could show it better... But it dosn't fit my taste for a camaro at all.

Well, I personally am not a big fan of many spoilers.. especially the one on your car (no offence) .. You'll probably find many will have the same opinon.. But it's your car.. if you like it, that is what counts.. I do commend you on your ambition on bringing you car back from the dead.. It does look line a nice camaro. Personally any spoiler that came on a camaro or firebird will look good on your car. hands down.. I prefer the duck tail spoiler, the rear deck looks like it's missing something with out it.. I really recommend you get an alarm system in your car.. and since you don't have a factory security system (VATS), I would probably add a kill switch in your car too as an extra safe guard.

That's a rough story about what happened to you car. If mine gets stolen when I'm done building it, I'll probably kill someone. I'm putting way too much into it! As for the spoiler, I don't think it fits the car at all. I like either the stock 3-piece spoiler or the new aftermarket 5 inch high3-piece spoiler being made by Hawks Thirdgen (they advertise on this board in case you haven't heard of them yet). the hi-rise isn't bad, but isn't my favorite. Other than that... nothing else seems to really look right to me.

Maybe this will give a little bit better perspective.
Yeah, I totally agree with you that those totally flat hatches look naked, that's what I had before.
I just love everything about the spoiler. To me, it like a flying extension of the car. I look at it and it makes it look like its going somwhere without moving. I think people look at it too much as a hunk of steel sticking out of the back rather than a speedy looking extension. I really DO beilive that a paint job will help a lot. Any other suggestions? What would make this car look better? What would "go" with that spoiler?

what would go with that spoiler is a 6" muffler, and euro tail lights.
no offense
but i have been staring at it for about a minute now, and it so completely does not work.
it looks like the back of a DC-9 or something, about to get cleared for take off.
i'd go with the 3-piece spoiler, or the 91-92 high rise, either would look much better.

If you really like the 'wing' style spoiler.. Flyinlow's spoiler isn't to bad. or the 90-92 Z28 highrise spoiler, the one you have from the side looks like it was just 'stuck on'.. But you'll here may opinions on that.. as for the rest of the car.. I think some good gound effects would clean it up more.. Oh ya if you don't have any yet.. hop on e-bay and pick up some decent center caps for those rims..

Fast: Thanks for the reminder. I do need to get rim caps and maybe polish up the ones I already have, but they're already pretty shiny and the rubber is brand new.

First of all welcome to the board
From what I've seen, an aftermarket spoiler that's non-factory style CAN look good if it's "thick" and painted to match. The thin aluminum ones aren't meaty enough for the car. Flynlow92rs and iroc2nv have some pretty swingin' spoilers, and I feel they each match the car well. Iroc2nv's is a little more drastic, but so is the car, therefore it works
Good luck with the car, and be sure to get all your body mods in before the paint, there's always something you think of when it's too late
Browse around these boards and I'm sure you'll see plenty of ideas

If you put factory style ground effects the 91-92 Z28 high rise is my favorite. The 5" three peice spoiler looks cool too. The one you have just looks out of place and doesnt flow with the car. Heres my highrise, you cant really see the supports in the middle due to painting the stripes all the way around.

I think the style of the spoiler is fine, it just needs to sit lower. Something of the same style would look fine if it sat lower.

That looks horrid. DO not do that to your camaro. Fix up the body, paint, rims and tires before you put some dumb import wing on it.

I have to agree with everyone else. That spoiler is way out of place. I'd recommend the 5" high 3-pc. spoiler from Hawks if you want something that everyone doesn't have. The one on the car looks like it belongs on a Honda with lots of stickers on it.
To answer your other question: other things you might consider are removing the Camaro emblems from the front fenders and removing the door ding strips. You could replace the chrome door handles with black ones or paint them to match the car. The front tires are the wrong size which is why you have 3" of air between the top of the tire and the fender. If you're considering a custom hood, now would be the time before you get it painted.
If you decide to stay with that spoiler, prepare to defend your car constantly.

Personally, I barely like those wings on race cars. The aftermarket aluminum wings look like cheap knock offs and don't look quite as cool as they do on real race cars. I think if you had gfx, and the wing was a bit lower, had different endplates, and had different stanchions, I could probably go for it.

Usually when you put something importish on your car idiots on the street who know nothing about cars go wow thats cool, and gear heads just sit and shake their heads at you. I think with that spoiler youre even going to have the idiots going what the hell is wrong with that guy?

sorry, but that's what I really think
Oh my lord, is that thing there to push the car around. Looks like a handle to a baby carriage. That looks like complete crap. Are you out of your mind? No wait, let me guess, you're blind. Yeah that must be it. I am at a loss for words.

I guess I'll go with "Molotov cocktail" for this one, too.
Yeah Mark, but there is so much more I would love to say. I just can't find the right words to express myself.
I think it's going to be hysterical when the car literally starts to lift off at speed. Although, by lookiing at that car, it doesn't look like it could move out of it's own way, but I guess why that spoiler is there...to push it. I think the dude is now going to start having to pay attention to height limits under bridges.

Maybe if you painted it Gunmetal Grey it would look like a fighter jet. You'd have the air force grey car, aluminum wheels, and that spoiler. I think that would look good if you can't part with the wing. I can imagine painting shark jaws on the sides of the nose... Could use some ground effects too.

Well JesterDajet welcome to the boards I guess you see by now that these people are not afraid to give there opinion. Those aftermarket gaudy spoilers just do not work with these cars (or most others for that matter) See you sound like you should be driving an import you want to just stick something on your car to make it appear to be moving fast instead of doing something to actually make it move fast. The spoiler looks like crap. Look around these boards if you want to see some beautiful examples of how to mod your Camaro the right way. Seriously get some proper tires on that thing. I would put money into redoing the suspension or getting the engine up to snuff before painting.

Okay, you guys were saying somthing about the tires. Now, are the RIMS the wrong size? What size SHOULD they be? I like how there more space between the fenders and rubber on the front and less on the back.

Its not a lowrider its a camaro, you can't be serious. Have you just talked yourself into likeing these mishaps your car has undergone or is it like your first woman and it just feels so good you'll love her no matter how ugly she is?
