With the new cam I'm hoping for around 350 on the ground.

But this time I'd be happy to cross 300.

Solid tappet. It's an older 350 block, and I see a much better use of $500+ than a retro roller....

Besdies, I still need to replace my posi and get some drag radials!

Super nice valve covers. Do you have stud girdles? I don't see many centerbolt tall covers.

No stud girdles. I had some short black ones on there and it made the HSR look like a skyscraper... so I got the tall ones and painted the ribs to match the plenum.

sweet engine pic

do you know how much clearance you have from your valve covers to the rockers?

btw, can you get away with roller rockers and regular valve covers?

I've got Comp Magnum roller tip rockers. I havn't seen that full rollers fit underneath stock covers. But my roller tips fit under stock covers.

What kind of power were you making before the new cam?

I noticed the same thing. My tall valve covers really made the engine look better, the StealthRam looks less intrusive now. Anyway, lookin good.

I put down 264 to the wheels with the ET in my sig.

The track run was with a converter that died 3 days later, rings that didn't seal, lots of other problems.

While the motor was out I put in new rings, Honed, got the assembly balanced (which turned out to be way out of whack), polished the rods with ARP bolts, Found an intake and exhaust leak, Installing the new cam I found out the old one was on the wrong keyway *5degrees retarded*... The Protopline Heads I got that at that point had 4000miles on them.... the exhaust valve guides were SHOT and not sealing all the valves right.

We'll see if I can get to the 11's and run down a 383 in my sights

Which parts?

The heads were $800+ new... then it cost $440 for new guides, valve grind, new seats, unshroud the valves, clean some casting flash, retainers, 10deg locks and lash caps.

The engine work was $550 for the hone, balance, polish rods, arp bolts, rebuild rods, turn crank 10/10, tank the block.
Since I already had the hyper pistons from the firsttime I tried to rebuild it.

Cam/lifters $260
Springs $90
Pushrods $110
Bearings/Pistons Rings $100
Gaskets $100+

Plus other miscellanious things. Degree bushings, oil pump, pickup screen, pick up bolt on retainer, etc.

Hooray for Tax Returns!

you need a posi Rodney.

BTW, did you ever get headers, and a new carb on your mill?

Almost finished setting up a 4.10 posi/disc rearend right now. Should have it in by Cows III.
Also Mike let me barrow his almost new 750 double-pumper and I put it on this weekend. Needs more tuning.

No headers or exhaust yet.

that is going to kill you.

the DP and the 4.10's with your cam should be a good match though. you need exaust work though.

Just my .02... but you'd see much more out of the exhaust than the rear end. Hell I'm a pegleg right now!

other than the chrome valve covers/cast intake combo - it looks killer.

Cast intake? It's powder coated.... out of curiousity what valve covers would you suggest?

I would have powder coated the intake manifold chrome, it just looks a little out of place in red, you got black, red, polish, and satin without any real flow to the colors. The red would look less out of place if you painted the grooves on covers and plenum in red. Make it look more uniform.

Anyway man nice motor, congratulations!

You can't tell in my sig, but most of my convoluted tubing in the engine bay is red, when I get my holley throttle body it will have a red top plate. My Z28 emblems are red and my turnsignals are red. I have a 2nd gen steering wheel with a red z28.

It's the subtle things. Black and chrome/white is just too much.

The only satin is the waterneck because I havn't found one the right output chrome yet.

The plenum just needs a little bit more wet sanding to be as chromed as the covers.

nit pickin

Maybe its the pics then. If it's a polished/chrome looking powdercoat then it probably looks better in person. [edit] I was referring to the intake 'plenum' rather than the red base. The plenum should match the valve covers. sorry if that wasn't clear in my earlier post.

I would have used something similar to the corvette magneseum covers for someone with a bare cast intake or 'dull' finish. Chrome or high polished aluminum is hard to make "work" in an engine bay IMO, and you can't just have one part...then again you can't chrome EVERYTHING either so it's a fine line between 'done' and 'overdone'.

HTH.... no flames intended.

twilight.....i happen to love that engine color combo and will do my block and heads in black, intake base in red, plenum polished with chrome valve covers, water neck, and timing chain cover.......would VHT brand high heat caliper heat hold up on that intake base you think? its got a great red to it and would match my calipers perfectly!!!

It would hold up fine, but I would use the engine enamal 500 deg paint. Holds up just as good, and it's a thicker paint so if you give me a ton of coats it looks almost like powdercoating. I did that to my water pump and a previous intake.
