Does anyone know what I'm talking about? Can I buy these?

I did this really crappy on paint. Anyhow....I saw a set of these at a show before..but I'm not sure what they are called. You put them infront of your tires at a show and it looks like your car is sitting on checkered flags. They are cutout around the tire and they fit around each one. I would like to get a set for the next show I go to....but I have know idea what they are called and I have know idea where to get'em. Does anyone know? Thanks

show floor covering is a very wide topic. i'm not sure exactly what your question is. are you looking for snap together checkered board that can be used as a floor covering for more or less indoor shows?

are you looking for typical black and white vinyl checkerd pieces that can be picked up at home depot.......what exactly is it? i need to know before i can help because chances are it was something like above that was made out of something below and cut to desired fit.

the only thing i can truly think of that uses what your talking about is a snap together set and the reason it was probably just around the tires is the price at roughly 2k for enough to do the whole underside unlike this picture that uses home depot tiles and is under 100 for a whole car.

They are individual squares that go with each wheel. It makes the car look like it's sitting on checkered tile....not the whole car...just the wheels. Each square is cut out, so they "butt" up to each wheel.....the whole car doesn't sit on top of a 1 piece checkered material.

The checkered material Kandied posted is to big....the checkered portion needs to be smaller...

I friend of mine has a 1997 SS 30'th Anniversary.....bought it brand new....anyways..I haven't talked to him in about 2 years..and the last show we were at....he had these. At the time..I didn't really recognize'em. But they are a very simple design....just 4 squares of checkerd vinyl, cut to fit each tire, & they butt up to each tire....if I could find the material...I could make'em....but..I'm not having much luck...

this is a quicky on how it can be made

Also, if anyone knows where I can get the checkered vinyl at, let me know. If can't be a huge pattern...I'm going to check out Lowes and Menards on Monday...

yes that's exactly what i was talking about then. any flooring company will carry the stuff as it is used mainly for tile in bathrooms, kitchens, etc.

they often come in 12" or 1' squares and are either one solid color so the squares are larger or have typically 4 to 8 mini squares depending on what you buy. if you have a major home improvement store like home depot that's where to go.

i posted that picture as an idea...those are individual 1' squares that are just pieced together and held down by tape in most cases.

here are some more examples.

you can design them any way you choose but most put the car on the tiles as it looks alot better then just pushing them up around the wheels. the only time you would want to do shapes around the wheels are when you may be using mirror tiles like my indoor pic in my sig.

another smaller style......i have info to the more expensive pieces that interlock but going with the vinyl is your best bet. these are typically small 1' pieces that are put together. it would be very expensive to have a complete roll and keep it looking nice since you would have to roll it for storage which is impracticle.

thanks for the pictures kandied. Now...it's just finding the right size of checkered material. For what I'm doing, the checkered area needs to be much smaller then most of the pictures you've posted. If I went to shows that were inside...I would do what has been posted in the pictures....but every show I go to...they are always outside...and I'd just like to spice it up around the Z some. I can always hit some flooring stores....and like I said..Lowes and Menards too. If I'm going to be making them 2 feet by 2 feet...how much material would I need? Four 2 feet by 2 feet squares.....? Anyone wanna guess?

makes sense....

anyhow i think going with the smaller checkers looks very out of place the 1' or 12" solid color squares looks best. if your going to put them just under your wheels or around your wheels you can do that and smaller 6" or even 4" squares would be alright but in my opinion doesn't look that good.

either boarder your car with it or throw them under the whole thing. also, when using grass your going to have a hell of a time with tiles being vinyl. it's really not going to look the way you want it.

I won't be using these in any grassy areas. I went to a flooring shop today and found exactly what I've been looking for. I'm getting 12 feet of it for $22.00 (2 feet wide). The squares are 4 inches and they do look the best. I just made a pattern for them...but I going to make a few patterns to decide which looks best. The material is vinyl....and I think I might use 1/4 plywood as a backing...so they sit nice and flat... Here is the 1st pattern I've made from cardboard....and I know right now...it just looks like a piece of cardboard rolled under my tire....just wait till I get the vinyl...it'll suprise you.

definately use some plywood if your going that route with such a small area otherwise the tiles will separate as you drive on them. i personally don't like just the tires done that way but that's just me. the vinyl should look great. they also come in different color combinations for those that want something that really stands out.

good luck with it!

black and white would probably be best since his car is black.

ohhh, and where do you find such ugly, i mean custom, cars to take pictures of Kandied (actually only talking about the first one you posted

the tiles will separate as you drive on them.

I see what your saying....but..the tiles can't seperate...because it's a one piece material...it's a sheet of checkered material..nothing seperate. Also...I'm not driving on anything...they "butt" against each wheel....but it does have the effect that the car is sitting on each tile...
