New paint

My 89 Iroc is Metallic Blue. I am wanting to get it repainted. Sanded to the metal, a no sh** NEW paint job. What is the normal price for something like this. Actually never had a car repainted, just don't wanted to get ripped off.

I have a friend that works in a reputable body shop, and they would get lik $2500 + for a real paint job. Far from a Macco job, in quality and price. I'm going to do my own car, but maybe slide one of that shop's painters a couple hundred to do the spraying for me.

This is not a "Couple weekend" project!

I agree with JP84Z430HP. A good paint job will cost $2000 to $3000. I am in the middle of painting my IROC and have $1300 just in materials. That is using a 3 stage red paint but it still cost a lot to use good material.

if you are willing to do the prep work yourself (sanding, taping, etc) then you will save LOTS of $.

I just had mine done this spring. Total bill was $6K. That is taking it down to the metal and bringing back up..... That was with new weather stripping all around, new graphics etc. Cost a few dollars but it was worth it to me. http://personal.atl.bellsouth.net/at...brote/main.htm

hey ben, use 80 grit for the sanding. go to metal cuz u will get the best results of everything is removed. i used 120 for a while then switched to 80 and it went 2 times faster. havent gotta clue about what brand primer, except that you should spray it on using an air compressor, not the spray can.

thanks dan, I was wondering if I would have to buy a compressor; now I know I have to... This is going to be a big project.. but at least my friggin bumper finally came in. took pontiac 2.5 weeks to get it when they said it would take 3 days. Not bad considering I got a Gen. GM bumper for 179 bucks (god, i love hookups )

Make sure that you hand sand that hood with a "long board" sanding block. If not, you risk having your hood look rippled. This goes for any 'glass hood.

For primer, I'd go with the same brand as the paint you plan to get. They usually work better as a system. I always reccomend PPG and DuPont paint products, PPG first. I may get DuPont, because the parts store our shop get parts from carries it!

I also wouldn't skimp on the sandpaper either. A quality paper will pay for itself! I would use 80 grit on a DA sander, then primer it and work up to finer paper. 400 grit or better on a DA, or 320 or so by hand. I've been using Carborundum abrasives paper, and seem s to be doing well.

On a final note, Cleanliness is godliness! You may think you have it clean, but you can get it cleaner! It just takes one dust spec to ruin the whole car for you!

If cost is $2-3,000 for new paint job,how much more would it cost to go with a color change (considering all visable and hidden original paint is changed to new color)?
