Tinting Windows
Tinting Windows
I tried tinting the back window last weekend and its a bitch! How the hell did you gget yours done, I have done it before, but my back window with the defrost is really hard. I bought the 6"x30' kind for the back. Is there anything that could help me, I suppose another person couldn't hurt.
i had my back window tinted like 2 months ago by professionals, and the did it one strip at a time between the defroster lines. i'm sure if you're not experianced at it, that it would be very dificult.

Tinting the back windoes of our cars can be a 'religious' expierience (shouting names of "praise" to a certain being
). The harders part is that the back glas is often irregular in shape somewhat on the curves. Some pro shops use a certain kind of tint that when heated conforms to curves mush easier. I used 2 sheets on my camaros back window cutting a few 6-10" relief cuts from the edge horizontally towards the curve,,, it's still not easy task to keep it there or keep the dirt out of the tint. Having a rear defrots will help because you can hide the relief cuts in line with the defroster

It was a little easier in my RS - it doesn't have a rear defroster.
I took it to a shop in Whittier, CA. They did the back window and the 2 side windows for $100. They did a great job, there's only one line in the back window, and it never bubbled, peeled or anything.
Not a problem now that I live in Southern CA again, but when I lived in Seattle that really bit!

I've tinted My 91'RS about 20 times over the last 6 years.. and I have done the rear window in two pieces only once (and it wasn't easy) I do it in three pieces, now... and it's way easier. With two or three pieces, the key is to put the tint (with the backing facing up) on the outside of the glass first. Then, You can cut it and work the lines/bubbles out of it before You ever even wet it. A hairdryer works good for heating places up so they will "curve". I just wet the outside and use My hands mainly, at first...because one swipe of that squeegee on top of a crease and... to the trash it goes! I do mine with the 24"by6' pieces. I just put a piece in the middle of the window (with the top and bottom of it still clear) smooth it out... then take another piece and cut it in half and use the straight edges (that I didn't cut) to but up next to the top and bottom of the middle piece. it looks great and is way easier than trying it with two pieces. good luck!

Everything I know I learned by messing it up at least once.

Doing it in separate pieces SUCKS! It looks terrible. The CORRECT way to do it is to spray the outside of your hatch glass with soapy water. Place the tint on top of it. Hit it with a heat gun. This molds the tint to your window. Peel off the tint, place it on the inside of your glass, trim as necessary. All with 1 piece.

That's how they did it on my '92. Laid it on the back and hit it with the heat gun. I didn't think they could do it one piece, but they sure did. Looked wonderful, never peeled, etc.
