need advice, should i trade cars or not?
Ok, I'm thinking about trading my car, but need some other people's opinions. My car is a basically stock low-mileager, and I'm looking for a camaro that's in good condition inside and out, but with a nicely built engine.
Right now I have an '87 Iroc, 350TPI with 50,000 original miles, 3.23. posi, disc brakes, t-tops, yadda yadda yadda, the whole nine yards. All that's not stock is a Banks exhaust system, and $1000 in stereo equipment.
The car I'm looking at right now is an '89 Iroc with 120K on the body, but around 2k on the engine/tranny. It's pushing around 425hp, 360 torque. Has 3.45 (or something near that) gears, a whole lot of stuff. Interior's in good shape, paint/body is in good shape. Not as good as my current car, but I'd be willing to sacrifice some in the interior/exterior department to get 200 more hp.
Anyway, my car isn't perfect. It needs new valve spring seals, there's a small scratch above the driver side front wheel well, scratches on driver side window, the corner of the driver side t-top is sort of broken, etc. Nothing major, but a number of small things. I bought the car a year ago for like $5200.
Anyway, here's a link to my page, that has a ton of pics I just took. www.cardomain.com/id/stsa84
And here's a link to the page of the guy's car I'm talking to. http://f2.pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/for.../ph//my_photos and a few more that show the "problems" of the car http://f2.pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/for...=/a62c&.src=ph
So, considering all of this, what would YOU do?

Well he says he's looking for a more suitable daily driver. He works 40 minutes away, so has to drive his car 80 miles a day, and wants something more streetable. He wants a lower-milage car that can just be a cruiser.
I bought my car for $5200, and have about $1800 in it since then, so mine's about $7000. His would probably sell for $3000-3500 if it still had the stock engine, but he's put a couple grand into the drivetrain, so it's probably around $8000.
Seems like a pretty fair trade to me, just not sure if I want to do it or not yet.

Go with him and get his car dyno'd so you know what you are getting.
Personally, I'd just save up some money and build an engine/tranny to drop into the car or just slap a 125shot on your car and call it a day.

well since your engine is pretty fresh you prolly dont really feel like droping another one in. Sure your paint job looks killer and your cars got low miles but what exactly are you looking for? A daily driver or a fast camaro. If your looking for the fast camaro Id say do the trade before he looks elsewhere. It looks already that hes got some expensive stuff into his car. Why waste more money to make your car as good as his. Just take his and call it a day. Take it to the track and tell us how it does too!

I would of replied sooner if I had found this thred sooner.
I can answer any questions about the Blue Iroc.
It was my car. I built it. Shawn or VettNes who owns the car now made a few changes after he got it like rear, tires, wheeles, carb, but even after he got it I've continued to do 99% of the wrenching on it. I sold it because I needed something less radical that I could drive more. It's fine for running around town in it and the trips to the track every once in a while. But for everyday you better like spending money for gas. It's too thirsty for me to drive everyday. Anyway I sold it and bought the GTA thats the car on the right in the pic above. Shawn has the Blue Iroc and then the car he drives to work and back everyday which is a 96 LT4 6spd. Grand Sport Vette. With the distance he has to drive to work and back everyday it's killing him to keep putting miles on the Vette everyday and not be able to drive the Iroc because it's to thirsty.
Any Questions you may have or if you want to verify anything that he's told you about the car please ask.

It really depends on your situation and what type of car your looking for. He's looking to trade because you have a clean low mileage, stock with decent gas mileage, and nice t-tops for sunny day drives.
He's got a clean hard top IROC with a heavy hitting motor, that sucks for a daily driven commuter car, eats lots of gas, and requires a little more mechanical knowledge when things start acting up (because they always do, timing, carb tuning, etc.).
I think its a pretty fair trade, its all a matter of what you want your IROC for. Weekend toy or neccesary transportation.

If it were me.. I'd stick with your car and build it just because it has T-tops lol. I love t-tops.
But if you really want the power, then go for it and have fun!!
It's just like it was said above.. Daily driver, or weekend warrior?

ehhh, things aren't looking good for either of the camaros. i'm a junior in college, and was going to go to a school 6 hours away this year, but all the classes i needed were full, so i had planned on staying here in town. well, everybody who hadn't paid their fees by yesterday were dropped from their classes, so now the classes i need are open.
anyway, unfotunately i think it's time to get rid of the camaro.
i'll be putting about 1,500 miles on whatever car i drive each month, and i'd rather not do that to my 50,000 mile camaro. (have a g/f back in town, so 600 miles roundtrip every other weekend from college to home and back, plus 75 miles a week driving around town at school)
this sucks....so now i'm looking for either a Grand Am GT or a Durango

I don't understand that logic. Either of those choices will cost the same or more as your cars worth. Neither will be more dependable, and neither will save you gas money, so why would you trade out for those. If you have to bite the bullet buy something economical that will run forever.

You're right that neither of those two cars will be more dependable than my camaro now. And they are more expensive than what I could sell my car for. But I will save alot on gas.
I figured out that with the Grand Am, I'll save $1600 this year on gas alone. The amount I save on gas will be almost enough to make up the difference in price of selling my car and buying a Grand Am. A Durango won't be as drastic a difference, but I'll save around $800.
Another reason...I need a car that will hold more of my stuff.
Another reason...I'd rather see my low mileage car go to somebody who can keep it low mileage. At the rate I'll be going, I'll put 18,000 miles on a car a year. In less than 3 years my camaro will have hit 100,000.
Believe me, I don't want to get rid of it. It just seems like there's nothing else I can do right now.

The 1995-1998 vintage Chevy S-10 Blazers are pretty affordable right now. IIRC they use an Izuzu drivetrain, but it doesn't seem to have too much trouble. They're also fairly good on gas, better than the Durango anyway. Just make sure, if you're using Dexcool with one, to never put tap water in with it.

Fuel Economy Dodge Durango 4.7L
Fuel Type Regular
MPG (city) 13
MPG (highway) 18
MPG (combined) 15
Grand am GT
20 mpg city / 29 mpg hwy
You will have a slight increase in gas mileage with the V6 Grand Am but I understand those numbers are inflated so I wouldn't expect quite that much. The Durango no better maybe slightly worse. You should be getting at least 20-22 freeway with your Camaro.
Another good point as mentioned above the difference you will pay in insurance will negate any gas mileage savings.
As far as carrying capacity theres no argument the Durango will have alot more cargo room. The Grand Am I don't think so. Decent trunk But I don't think its enough to be significant over the hatch and trunk area on the Camaro.
Lastly its your Camaro, who cares how many miles you put on it. If you are not keeping it than it means nothing. Don't even try to tell me that you would only sell to a reputable collector who promises not to put many miles on it and leave it in the garage as some historical object. You don't guarantee a long life for that Camaro just becasue you don't drive it.
You can do what you want but I think your rational is skewed.

I don't know what mpg I'm getting right now on my Iroc, but it's not 22. I've driven down to Valdosta once in my Iroc to check the school out, and once in a Grand Am GT that was a rental while my sisters car was in the shop.
In my car, it took 3 tanks of gas to go there and back. In the Grand Am, it took 1.5.
As far as insurance...it will only be $400 more a year.
As for price of a new car...a good friend of our family owns a Pontiac, Buick, GMC dealership. He sells us cars for the price that he buys them as trade-ins. So I'd get a new car for a good $2-3000 less than I could if I bought it from another person or another dealership.
Trunk space...my sub takes up my trunk space in my Iroc. In a new car it could just take up a corner of the trunk. Plus there's rear seats that can hold more than my rear seats now.
All this sounds like I'm dying to get rid of my car. I'd love to keep it and buy a second car as a daily driver but that isn't possible.
And as for selling my car...haha, no I'm not gonna try to say that I'd only sell it to somebody who planned on only driving it once a month. It's just that I bought the car for $5200 cause it had low mileage. If it's gonna be at 100,000 in 2 1/2 years, I'd have been better off just buying a 100,000 mile car for $3000 and not worrying about putting mileage on it. I'd rather sell it now and get back the money I paid for it.
But it's all still up in the air...hopefully things will work out.

Was the Grand Am rental the V6 GT? Theres no way it should be getting twice the gas mileage. Anyway I was just throwing my two cents out, I am not a die hard who would tell you to hold onto your Camaro no matter what. Good luck in whatever your endeavor.

roughly 250. the iroc would go about 220 before i'd fill it up. I fill up whenever the needle first touches the red, cause i don't know exactly where on the gauge empty is.
