Another Thirdgen Video!!
Well, after all the hoopla of Dmonarch's movie, and waiting almost 5 months for the throw togehter of it, I was some what dissapointed. Don't get me wrong, i'm not saying it was not put together well, or that I didn't like it, however I guess in all the wait and excitement I was expecting too much, but that's just my HO. However, given that there was so many movies submitted and there were so many left over, I have decided to try my directorial and editoral skills once again. If any of you have a movie that WAS NOT submitted in the "submit your thirdgen videos here" thread, then please post it asap. If you posted it in that thread, then I already have it, as I downloaded every movie from the thread in the last hour. I am going to try to put this together quickly, but not so quickly that It cannot be done well. Let me know guys. Hey, as I look at it, you can never have toooo many thirdgen compilation videos!!

There were 3 reasons that a lot of clips didn't make it into my vid.
1) Quality - The quality was horrible. Honestly, I had some that didn't even look like 3rd gens. I have a big problem with people who put videos together and mix and match video quality so much that it distracts you from the whole movie.
2) Format - About 1/3 of the videos that I received were in .mov format. This is an encoding that Apple has copyrighted. It's pretty much impossible to mix .mov files with .mpg and .avi files unless you have really good software.
3) Size - The movie turned out to me almost 60mb as it was. I picked the best quality .mpg and .avi files that I could and threw them in there. Any more would have made it nearly impossible for anyone on dial-up to get. You have to remember the audience who you are directing the video toward. Many of them don't have a broadband connection.
Again guys, I apologize for how long it took me to make that short movie, I have a lot of important things going on right now.
If you can make a better video, I encourage you to do so... but remember... it is impossible to please all the people all of the time. There is always someone who is going to be upset.
... On a side note, I have gotten about 30 IMs from people telling me that I did a good job with the movie even if they weren’t in it.

DigitalMonarch0, what prog did u use to make that (i'm guessing that windows media editor thing). the audio could of been 128 or even 96 instead of your 160 kbps (could of saved a few megs). when i make movies i normally just have it end up so that 1min=10megs. that's good enough for alot of people. so compression could of been better (but if u were using that WME then i don't blame ya) all in all. it was put together well. audio sorta sucked, should of been tuned out alittle so u could still clearly hear the cars and have the song as a backround. it sounded like my speakers where maxing out even tho it was on the lowest volume (distortion)
BTW. i'm sure u could of DLed a converter to make the mov's to avi's. they r free progz too. if not, i know u can do it. i just did to double check. hell...i'd like to try and make a vid too, but time won't let me

Reducing the audio frequency rate would have worstened the sound quality of the video. If your speakers are already having a hard time picking up the sound... then lowering the frequency of the sound isn't a good alternative. On a side note, I have played the vid on at least 3 different computers and it hasn't sounded poor yet.
As for the music being too loud, I disagree. Everyone's clips were recorded at different volumes so the entire project as a whole would have sounded really choppy if the music was quieter and in the background.
Yes I used windows movie maker, I didn't really want to, but I can't get a hold of better software until school starts again in the fall. My OC3 connection would have made it a lot easier.

I have made better videos with other tools; I will never again use WMM.

DMonarch, don't get me wrong, like I said, I really liked your movie, and I know how tough WMM can be, that's actually what I was going to try to use again, but i'm really dreading it, and will see if I can find any other programs that I can pick up right quick. I think the sound quality of your movie was decent, especially given what you had to work with. And I totally know what you mean about the quality of so many movies bein shatty, but i'll see what I have to work with. If any of you guys have anything you'd like to see added, or have any suggestions, post up!

I don't use any of the low end programs because they are more difficult to work with and are extremely limiting.
I use the Vegas Video series,...which is around a $600 program. Stand-alone I'd say it beats Adobe Premier. Vegas is awesome.
I can use almost any file format, individually edit the sound and volume levels for each clip and even within each clip, etc...
I'd could probably throw together a thirdgen video very quickly if I had all the files and such....I'm just so busy editing wedding videos and working at my other two jobs.
Hmmm....point me to the direction of where all the source file videos are located.....

Stingray, do you have AIM? if so IM me "netburnrol" and I'll send you my files.
If you prefer a certain file format you have to specify or I will use my typical format which is .mov since I do most of my editing on my powerbook.

VIDEO EDITING QUESTION:
what program can i use to make videos with music but with sacfificing video size/quailty. i got windows movie maker, but when i compile a few 640x480 videos once the video is saved its 320 x280...whats with that?
also what program could i use to modify video clips, like take out the first and last few seconds of a video?

I've used Windows movie maker a couple of times, havn't had the smaller display problem you mentioned, maybe try saving it differently?? And WMM will also edit clips, all you have to do is take the movie you want, and wherever you want it to start or end, hit the "split clip" and you'll have one clip of exactly what you want.

hey Stingraye. and anyone else who decides to make a Video. I write dance music and if you guys are interested I'd give a stab at writing some tunes to go along with the music.
maybe send me the video with no sound first.. and one with a theme that you have chosen.
I'll see what I can do. my aim is GOJ WildFire

Aww, come on now man. You can atleast give me a little more credit than that!! That was the first thing I did, and it was looking for file information for about 2 minutes, then finally gave an error. And no, just "left clicking" on it didn't do anything either!!

On our JVC Digital Video camera I have a USB, MiniDV, and S-Video port. It also takes pictures and the USB mode only works with the memory mode and not the video. I don't have MindiDV or S-Video on my computer so do they make a MiniDV cable that turns into a USB plug? The software it came with is only for getting the pictures off but comes with a decoder for sound for the video.
I don't know but the video sounds like it will be cool. Wish I could get some footage for ya. Oh well.

The DV port you're seeing is probably the firewire connection. Have a look at this and see if the small end looks like it'll fit.

Thanks ! Yeah I was gonna submit some video of 3rd gen drifting, but never got it encoded in time and missed the cutoff, sorry guys. I ended up editing my own little trailer for the club website sometime later, but then started having major computer issues, and lo and behold the 200gb HDD failed. So I lost ALOT of footage, as well as some of the completed little movie trailer things I made (made 5 different versions). Well then turns out I was able to copy the first trailer I made from the failed HDD (was still on good sectors I guess), and I had a copy of the 3rd version on DVD. I uploaded the first version of the trailer to my server, and then the rest of the computer totally died. Mobo died, cpu died, powersupply died, and the second HDD died. Horrible luck, the PSU fried everything except the ram and PCI cards. I almost got my new box running, but in the meantime I've just been posting from random places (work, inet cafe, etc). In the meantime, if you guys would like to watch the first version of the trailer I made, you're welcome to. Here's the link:
http://www.powerslideways.com/video/...s-Trailer1.zip
Its in a .zip format to prevent streaming the video, so right click, save as, download, unzip, and then view (its a MPEG). I made this little clip in 2 days with the Pinnacle Studio v8 software that came with the Pinnacle encoding card (with breakoutbox). After playing with the software some more, I think this clip is pretty lame, but not bad for 2 days of experience hahaha. I still gotta get the 3rd version of the trailer off the DVD, but gonna have to wait till I can get my box running again.
