I wish. Although, I still want a setup like Monte had - one giant connection plate that you can disconnect everything at the firewall with.

Man I wish! I studied this subject long and hard last winter when I had my motor out. Our firewalls leave much to be desired. I took some measurements and did some exploritive surgury to see what could be done. Most of the custom hotrods out there with smooth firewalls have their brake boosters either mounted under the car or up in the dash area. This seems like very daunting task with our cars. Then there is the issue with the heater box/blower.

Mine is getting pretty damn close to that. When I had the motor out last spring, I patched all the holes where the heater used to be. Also took off the wiper motor and patched that. I have a 4th gen wiper motor inside the wiper cowl, still have a little work to do on one of the wiper arms and the wires but other than that its done. I still want to move the relays to somewhere else. I looked at moving the booster and that would be a huge PIA. Originaly I was going to skin the firewall with a thin sheet of polished aluminum, but that wasnt working out to well so I said screw it and just painted it black to match the rest of the engine bay. When I get a chance I will post some pics.

PonyKiller.....I was wonering if that was possible...putting a wiper motor inside the cowl....hummmm now you got me thinking. I got caught in a hell of a rain storm coming home from Superfest this year with no wipermotor
Jeff..what are you going to do with the blower/ heater box? It doesn't look too bad painted body color like mine but it's sill an eyesore.

it's gone...i don't have air and because of that no need for anything other then a working vent. the new motor makes more then enough heat and a nice sweater works in the fall.
looks so much better with a clean bay. just trying to figure out what to do with the drivers side as the relays and wiper motor are bothering me. few more kinks with the harness and the motor/stb is all you'll see.

I think you should go all out and find a way to hide the brake booster/master cylinder
Then tell us how you did it.

put a good picture up again....i'm sure many would like to see it. i'm having a hard time figuring out how to make the wiper functional and removing the motor as well as relocating all of those relays. the dash leaves much room to be desired. there just isn't any room to move the brake booster either. one would need something completely different. electric brakes of sorts.

Heres some from last year don't have any good current ones not that there is much diff. I have a plug in the hole for the wiper motor since you have to have one in Illinois (never been hassled about not having it on though). After three days in the rain on the power tour its on the top of my list to take with me next year
Edit: Found some newer ones but it is still hard to see what it looks like because of the reflection

Yeah those wire looms are hideous monstrosities taking away from the art of an engine. They are just all over the place. Kind of hard to have a wireless looking engine bay running a computer controlled car with sensors.

call me crazy but some of those bare firewalls look ugly. You need to have something to put there to an extent. I do agree theres too much wiring in our engine bays as stock its rediculous.

I will try and post up some new pics this weekend.
I kinda agree with ddn69. I have a huge empty flat space where the heater box used to be and to some extent it looks kinda funny.

If I can find my camera, I'll post mine. I smoothed the entire thing after I removed the A/C - heater, etc... I re-routed all of my wires through the firewall and then down the inside of the fenders for a completely clean appearance. I really want to find my camera, or at least someone around here that will let me borrow one. My new engine/ supercharger/ etc. is in and finished.

i bet some of the carbed guys have some clean bays. Btw the guys who removed the ac did u also remove the whole box, and when you do , dont you lose the ability to use the vents and everything if you smooth the firewall.

Then again I didn't need heat in FLA. and always had the tops out on nice sunny days..
Now that I'm on Ohio I'm debating on a Non ac heater box I have laying around. or just a little plug in heater I see alot of people using

Anybody metalworked the inner fenders to get rid of the mounting pads for the wiper fluid and coolant tanks? I thought I saw someone's car around here that had the inner fenders all smoothed out....looked realy nice.

quite a few cars like that.....mine included now. also rewelding the strut towers and smoothing them out.
here is a basic picture of what mine is coming out to be, it will be slightly cleaner but will have similar strut ideas. this is a nice setup.

Thanks for the compliment
I didn't do the work myself but I saw it in progress and know how it was done. For the smaller square pads, they cut each one diagonally in an X shape, flattened it out, trimmed the excess and welded the seams. For the large one on the drivers side, i'm not exactly sure where they cut it, but basically the same procedure was done. The welds were ground down then a thin layer of fiberglass was laid over the entire inner fender to smooth it out. I have a few in progress pics on my cardomain page and I could probably find more if there's something in particular that you wanted to see. If you decide to have a custom body shop do it, expect to pay approx $500 not including paint. My entire engine compartment was $1000.
I can't wait til I get the engine and everything in there to show a "finished" clean engine bay
