Tire Care

Years ago, I used to use a product called Vinyl Top wax on my tires. It was like shoe polish, was a paste and shined it with a shoe brush when it dried. Left a deep satin shine that lasted much longer than any of these liquid treatments. I may try some Kiwi black shoe polish, but has anybody used this or something similar??

Tires aren't supposed to shine. Rubber is flat black and looks best when clean and black. To see what I mean, take some Simple Green, spray it on the tires, let it sit for about 10 seconds, and use a brush dipped in cold water to wash the tires. When you're done rinsing, the tires will look awesome. Just remember, rubber should be clean, not shiny!!

Tires look best with the "wet" look. I agree tires shouldn't shine they should look clean and wet.

Tires "shouldn't" look any specific way. You like them wet, try, shiny, dull or dirty, good for you. If you want them to look "natural", Mopar makes a low-gloss interior protectant that should do the trick. If you want them shiny/wet, you have a million and 1 choices, but most of them are all silicone which will sling black crap all over the side of your car and will turn brown and won't easily come off your tires next time you wash. I just bought a bottle of Maquires stuff. It smells like grape cough medicine and is thick. You pour it onto an applicator then apply it. I only drove the car twice since I put it on, but there was absolutly no crap slung all over my car, and 2 weeks later it still shines nice and isn't brown.

I will agree with Jim that Meguiars tire treatment seems to work quite well.

If I remember correctly,, most tires are maunfactured with an inhibitor in the rubber to keep them from dry rotting w/o the use of protectants. The petroliums used in tires protectants reacts with whatever is mixed in the tires causing them to turn a brownish color. I think Mothers (or someone) makes a protectant that is petrolium free that will not make your tires discolor. Hope I remembered that right,I've been wrong b 4.

I always thought the browning was due to the dirt and brake dust being attracted to the slimey, oily, residue left by these so-called "protectants"
