Opinions on painting wheels after polishing needed

What have you done or what would you do, spray paint or automotive paint through a spray gun? Or maybe powder coat? I did search for a while and dug into some old posts. Now I would like to hear from those who did it previously if they would change anything. I found that 95% of everyone used the rattle can. Also, I believe it was Wishmaster'sIrocZ who used an automotive paint and it came out great. Oh, and pics would be cool also to show the difference. I am looking to do this once and only once. A nice suggestion for a clear coat or finisher on the wheels would be welcomed as well to try and keep them looking frshly polished/painted. I know there is a sticky on polishing but not really the finishing aspect on them, ie: painting/coating. Thanks

If you're going to polish them, why paint over your work polishing them? IMO polished wheels look a lot better than painted wheels, it depends on the color of your car and the color you want to paint them though. What color do you want to paint them?

OK, Let me clear that up real quick, I will be polishing my Iroc wheels and therefore I would be painting the inserts grey again. Only the spokes would be polished. Sorry about that. That is the norm. I have yet to see a set fully polished as pretty much everyone I have seen so far has re-painted the inserts a color. My car is a dark blue so I feel the grey would go well with it just like stock. Matches my oem decals also. If anyone has a set of Irocs fully polished I would like to see them. They can't be too much different from the aftermarket chrome ones that are everywhere. To me though those wheels are just too flashy and the design of the wheel does not justify it. They look "off" to me but that is just my opinion. Painting would be the better route for me.

Here are my polished wheels with the rest painted black, using regular spray paint IIRC.

I asked a while back about polishing the whole thing, and apparently it would be even a bigger pain in the butt.

Paint is still fine as when I first put it on. I believe some of the shine from the gloss has gone, but it still looks good, could also be they just need a good cleaning from sitting for so long . Might have helped to put some clear coat over the painted parts.

I was told not to clear coat the polished parts as that would kind of negate the effects IIRC

Yeah, that is what I read everywhere. It causes like a haze when applied to polished parts. I have heard of Zoops Seal or something like that though. It is supposed to be pretty good. Never really looked into it but now that my wheels are polished I probally should. Like anything polished tough, it will need to be cleaned up regularly. I guess that is why people go to chrome finishing.

i fully polished mine. Then masked em off and glassbeadblasted the parts I painted. Then painted parts black.

This was done back in like 98/99

This is what they still look like today.

I asked pretty much that same question awhile ago...and here are some fully polished IROC wheels that look great!

I have the same wheels and they're at a shop being fully polished right now...Hopefully will have some pictures by mid-week?

Are you having them sealed with anything? I believe you were asking for that particular style of wheel polished, not how to finish them off. I think I am just going to use spray paint on these and focus on the prep work a lot so the paint holds true for a while. Spray paint seems to hold up it seems from my searches.

Chris, those look really good. And for the time that has passed that is pretty impressive. Have you powdercoated any wheels yet? Also, what have you to say about zoopseal? I would be putting the tires back on my wheels next weekend so I need to get my act together with this. thanks

If you can look past the price of zoopseal. Id say do it 110% well worth it.

Prep is the key to the spray paint lasting. Im polishing and powdercoating my ZR1's Prob in a Black Chrome center(spokes) and polished lips.

I just sold my polished stock rims centercaps are polished to match the rims.

You can polish parts and clear powdercoat them also. I have apic of some IROC rims polished and cleared with what I get called SUPER GLOSS CLEAR. it doesnt yellow like 95% of the clears out there.
