I use it all the time. I haven't washed my car in about 10 months.

So what exactly does the product do anayway, does it simply wipe dirt away or is it to create shine for an already clean car?

Both. Its good to use as a cleaner, it creates a little shine and it also gets the contaminates out of the paint

My car is always garaged. All I have to deal with is dust.

I washed my car and had to leave so did not dry it off. Had bad water spots all over it. Stuff took them right off and left a nice shine.

Definetly LOL! None of those guys including myself ever wash their cars unless it's absolutely necessary for some reason. That also takes the wax off and tends to creates swirles.

I very rarely wash mine. I use the detail stuff all the time. I will be stripping the wax off mine very shortly and do the swirl remover-polish-- wax and all that other stuff.

I've always used that type of product after washes to maintain a just waxed look ever since I bought the car. The paint that hasn't delaminated is still darn shiny for a daily driver.

Is that stuff better than their older/other versions?

I'm definetly in the came that believes washing is hard on paint - it's a cumulative effect though. No matter how careful you are, everytime you wash you are no doubt putting miniscule scratches into the paint. It's not noticed after just one or a few washes, but after years of it, the effect can be seen. I am super careful, perhaps to the point of absurdity, with washing - one mitt is for everything above mid-door level, another is exclusively used for below where more of the grime is etc.

Anyway, truth be known, washing is hard on paint over time.
